Senior Process EngineerDesktop Metal Jun 2019 - Nov 2023Burlington, Massachusetts, UsJoined as the company was ramping up its development effort on the Shop System, a lower-cost, high-throughput metal 3D printer. As a contract-engineered product, the Process Team became the core internal development group for which I was team lead. We were able to specify and validate hardware and software design changes and develop the process to meet our MVP requirements for an on-time launch. This success was followed by an aggressive campaign of new alloy releases and continuous improvement.Senior Process Engineer and Team Lead: • Validated design of proof-of-concept, alpha, and beta systems machines, providing feedback and recommendations to contract engineering team. • Tested, measured and optimized the printing process and the resulting printed parts against internally developed product requirements, informed when possible from ASTM, MPIF or other industry standards. • Partnered with external and internal teams to deliver six unique Desktop Metal branded, turnkey metal powders for use with the Shop System. Oversaw powder QA testing. • Wrangled printed part characterization data, material characterization data and printer and sensor logs into a multi-table JMP project file for in-depth analysis of trends and changes. Leveraged this data set to identify process shifts and aid in root causing. • Compiled Process team's status, needs and results to cross-functional coordination meetings and program stage-gate meetings. • Organized several continuous improvement DOEs that led to improved printed part metrics, for example refining of slicing parameters for improved green part strength. • As team lead for Shop System Process team, fostered professional growth for individuals (including in spreadsheets, JMP, Python and DOE) and collaboration across teams. • Active involvement in staff recruiting and reduction phases including on-boarding activities. -
Software Qa Engineer3D Systems (Previously Z Corporation) May 2004 - Jun 2019Rock Hill, Sc, Us3D Systems is a leading provider of 3D content-to-print solutions including 3D printers, print materials and on-demand custom parts services.QA Software Engineer:• Created Python scripts for automated software testing, specifically to exercise 3D System's raster-based slicing engine. Leveraged image analysis techniques for defect detection.• Primary contact between software and polymer-jetting engineering teams, coordinating development efforts of new features. Agile scrum leader (with Jira).Group Manager:• Collaborated with team members to determine gaps in our ability to characterize materials or system behaviors, and close these gaps with appropriate equipment purchases, test development, standard operating procedures and maintenance cycles.• Honed team's use of data, from identifying more valuable metrics to more routine statistical tests in Excel. DOEs created and analyzed in StatEase. • Established training and mentoring options for all team members. Encourage opportunities for cross-functional learning and team building. Organized and presented technical backgrounders for the R&D team.Color Scientist and Process Engineer:• With ImageXpert's drop flight system, tuned electronic drive waveforms for thermal and piezo printheads, jetting aqueous and non-aqueous fluids.• Partnered with chemists and material scientist to maximize overall color gamut and fidelity. Introduced colorimetric metrics for the selection of dyes and substrates. Championed several color reproduction specific improvements in the ZPrinter 650 ColorJet 3D printer.• Modeled and implemented a PID control loop for powder metering from a hopper.• Explored machine learning models in R as a replacement for existing print-time and consumable-usage estimation algorithms.• Advocated for and helped implement an internal variable drop-size printing and expansion to a 10-bit internal data path. -
Volunteer Guide, Program Assistant, Webmaster, And Board Of DirectorsOutdoor Explorations Apr 2003 - Aug 2010OE was an inclusive disability organization inspiring personal growth through outdoor adventures. Volunteer Guide, Webmaster (2003-) and Assistant to the Program Director (Spring, 2004). • Trip guide on kayaking, bicycling, hiking and community service programs. Volunteers ensure programs are fun, save experiences where everyone fully participates. • Worked closely with OE staff to keep the website current and informative. • Assisted the Program Director with arranging upcoming programs, scheduled and organized OE's 80 volunteers, and developed tools for tracking program and participant statistics.

Liaison to the Ink and Media Groups.• Developed several quantitative image analysis techniques to identify promising ink and media formulation combinations. • Documented media analysis procedures into SOPs to allow Consumables technicians to work autonomously and ensure consistent results. • Designed a VBA-enabled Excel workbook for the Quality Assurance group to use during ink qualification, calculating a simple pass/fail result and archiving additional details.• Identified and acquired industry standards to inform new product specifications.• Evaluated performance of a commercial spectrophotometer to ensure customer success with IRIS’s color management and calibration solution. Managed communication with instrument vendor and kicked-off software integration project. -
Technicial SpecialistMonaco Systems (Now X-Rite) Jan 1999 - Aug 2000Performed many roles within the engineering department, including engineering support, technical support, product management and quality assurance.• Delivered a cross-platform product for ICC profile creation and editing to an OEM client. Coordinated client expectations and engineering resources with specification reviews, release scheduling and bug tracking. • Maintained, monitored and upgraded desktop computer and network equipment. Initiated regular back up and antiviral routines.• Directed QA for Windows products. Performed some testing on MacOS and Windows systems, while managing all testing on the Windows (95, 98, NT4, 2000) platforms.• Built and maintained installers for MacOS and Windows platforms. Moved company to InstallShield for Windows Installer, in preparation for updates via the Internet.• Made service and installation visits to customer sites, to install a color management system or to help a customer with the use of such a system.
