About Klaus Attenkofer

As head of the experimental Division and scientific director of Alba, I’m responsible for managing the experimental division of the national Spanish synchrotron light source, creating together with my colleagues the scientific vision for the facility, and implement the tactical plan into the operations of the division. Since my early career as beamline scientist at HASYLAB/DESY, APS/ANL, and later at BNL/NSLS-II, I have focused on the development of new user programs by advancing instrumentation. Next to high heat-load optics developments for primary focusing and fluorescence collimation, I’m also involved in electronics and detector developments; in collaboration with my colleagues from high energy physics, astrophysics and various industrial partners, innovative technologies are developed for single photon and particle detection.Scientifically, I’m interested in the correlations between structure of matter and its functional behavior, especially in the areas of catalysis, energy storage, and materials growth. Developing methods which visualize the structure and at the same time show the causality between a structure change and the function is the approach I have chosen. First results indicate that this can be achieved by combining a multimodal experimental approach with a systematic comparison with theoretical ab initio calculations and simulations. Modern database approaches with data provenance, machine learning mechanism and deep learning play an important role.

Klaus Attenkofer Work Experience Details
  • Alba Synchrotron
    Scientific Director
Alba Synchrotron Mar 2019 - Present
  • Cells Alba
    Scientific Director
Cells Alba Mar 2019 - Present
    Barcelona, Spain
My current research interest is focused on the visualization of structures with atomic resolution in complex materials with low long-range order and the correlation of their functional behavior with specific sites in these materials. Most of the sample system studied are coming form the fields of heterogeneous catalysis, electro-catalysis, and energy storage. The visualization and function-structure correlation is based on a combination of data analytics, quantum chemistry, and various X-ray spectroscopy and scattering techniques. Key developments are in the area of data analytics, high throughput experimental X-ray techniques, including automated operando and in-situ experiments, X-ray beamlines and detectors.
  • University Of Chicago, Enrico Fermi Institute
    Visiting Scientist
University Of Chicago, Enrico Fermi Institute Jul 2011 - Present
    Chicago
Working with a team of detector and electronics experts on the development of new detector systems which uses channel plates and photo cathodes to detect single photons. My responsibility was focused on the development of photocathodes and the understanding of their growth.
  • Brookhaven National Laboratory
    Program Manager
Brookhaven National Laboratory Jan 2012 - Feb 2019
    Long Island Upton New York
Responsible for Hard X-ray spectroscopy program of NSLS-II. Currently we serve our user community at SSRL at BL2.2 and we build ISS, a damping wiggler beamline focused on high throughput in-situ and operando experiments, QAS a bending magnet beamline focused on QEXAFS in combination with powder diffraction, and TES a tender x-ray beamline which combines spectroscopy and microscopy in the energy range from 1.8KeV to 8KeV.All three beamlines will be operational in 2016.
  • Argonne National Laboratory, Aps
    Beamline Scientist
Argonne National Laboratory, Aps Jul 2001 - Jul 2011
    Chicago
Development of the time resolved spectroscopy program at 11-ID-D; besides the development of the programmatic aspects, I was also developing the beamline, including optics, detectors, electronics and a digital data acquisition system.
