Industry Engagement DirectorWintec - Waikato Institute Of Technology Jan 2018 - Dec 2022Hamilton, New ZealandI am leading strategic engagement with employers and work-integrated learning across the institution. My role has a strong external focus, where I build and maintain networks with employers and other community stakeholders to ensure that Wintec adapts their portfolio to industry developments and where I connect industry with our faculty. This often involves overcoming barriers, developing innovative training solutions, business cases and changes to academic processes and curriculum. If I do that job right, I learn through my networks, spot and develop opportunities and connect employers with the right people at Wintec. Success stories include working with the Cultivate Trust and the Tertiary Tech Alliance to push for short-term graduate jobs and long-term new degree apprenticeships. I have been a major player in the development of the Waikato Labour Market Strategy by the Waikato Labour Market forum, a precursor to the Regional Skills Leadership Group. My role has an internal focus, where I push and support all of Wintec’s faculty to do more work-integrated learning, provide more work-based learning, have industry people participate in the teaching and so on. That includes for instance managing the community of practice of all those people at Wintec who are placing students in work-experiences, internships, projects and the likes. It also includes ensuring they are all using the best practice processes and have the tools, like contract templates and placement management systems they need for their job. A major achievement was ensuring that all our programmes have elements of work-integrated learning, no matter how long or short they are. My previous experience managing campuses and leading a school of IT and a school of business, including leading the national consortium for the Bachelor of Applied Management, and my experience with all things academic prepared me well for this role. I know how things work in tertiary education and how to make them work better. -
Centre Director - Centre For Business, Information Technology And EnterpriseWintec - Waikato Institute Of Technology Nov 2012 - Dec 2017Hamilton, New ZealandThe Centre Director position is comparable to a Dean or the head of a large school at similar tertiary education institutions. I led the creation of the centre by merging the School of Business and the School of Information Technology. The centre grew steadily, from 1500 students in 2012 to 1900 students in 2017, with particular growth in international students, from 24% in 2012 to 32% in 2017. This growth also meant ongoing succession planning and recruiting of new staff. In 2017 the centre had over 75 staff and turnover was over 14 million. In Business, we reviewed our Business degree and joined the Bachelor of Applied Management consortium. In just four months we gained NZQA approval for delivery of the new Bachelor of Applied Management from 2014. Over the years we gained a leading role in the consortium and I became chair of the governance group. In Information Technology, we revived our IT programmes in a multi-year process. We introduced a totally new Bachelor of Applied IT in 2016 which gained Seoul-Accord accreditation by the Institute of IT professionals. We developed and in 2017 started delivery of a postgraduate suite in Applied IT, which leads up to a Master in IT. This was supported through a long-term professional development and recruitment programme which led to a very strong team of highly qualified IT experts. In Business Administration and in Tourism we were very active in the mandated review of qualifications and took a lead in the joint development of new qualifications. I am particularly proud of the development of work-integrated learning way before it became the topic it is now. We were also very active in international education, both attracting international students to NZ and working with partners overseas. We developed qualifications for off-shore delivery and entered partnerships with institutions off-shore. -
Head Of School Of It And Head Of School Of BusinessWintec Apr 2010 - Nov 2012As Head of School, I led the School of IT and the School of Business through exciting times of growth in both domestic and international student numbers. Establishing international partnerships and pathways. I developed industry connections, staff capabilities and improved business processes. I prepared both schools for a merger. -
