K. Matthew Dames is a dynamic, skilled, and accomplished executive who has been successfully leading mission-driven organizations for more than 15 years. Dr. Dames serves as Special Advisor to the Provost at the University of Notre Dame. This role enables him to utilize his legal, business and strategic expertise on opportunities facing the academy, including artificial intelligence. From 2021 to 2022, Dr. Dames was the 61st President of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the leading North American trade association for research libraries in academia and federal government. His full board term from 2019 to 2023 included three years as an Association officer, during which time he helped lead the organization through the COVID pandemic, its return to in person events, and its executive director leadership succession. From 2021–2024, Dr. Dames was the chief executive, academic, and talent officer of the Hesburgh Libraries and the university’s Press at the University of Notre Dame. In July 2022, Dr. Dames became the first chief librarian at the University of Notre Dame to hold the rank of academic dean. He also is the first African-American to serve as Notre Dame’s chief librarian.An attorney who also has earned a Ph.D., Dr. Dames focuses his research on copyright and finding legally and economically sustainable solutions to maintaining cultural heritage assets and archives. Dr. Dames also has accrued deep expertise in strategic planning and implementation, talent management, employment issues (including compensation and contracts), non-profit governance, and archival operations.
