About Kathleen Callahan
Hi there! I'm Kathleen Callahan, a UX writer and editor with 15 years' experience in writing, editing, and making digital experiences clearer. My work has always centered around words. Whether I’m writing interface copy for a mobile app, content for an online college course, or an article for a newspaper, I always have the same goal: to make sure what I write is easy to read, to the point, and accurate. I edit with similar goals in mind. When I edit someone else’s work, I aim to make their writing clear, consistent, and factually accurate, without getting rid of their unique authorial voice and style. I have more than 10 years of experience proofreading, copy editing, and fact checking newspaper and magazine articles and online course content. Most recently, I worked as a UX writer for Oxygen, an early-stage mobile banking app, and before that in the Product Office at Southern New Hampshire University, one of the largest online nonprofit universities in the U.S. In these roles, I wrote language that guided users through a digital experience: tooltips, error messages, nudges, emails, instructions, labels, CTAs, alt text, onboarding content, FAQs, video scripts, and more. Before I was a UX writer, I worked as a senior learning experience designer, senior content editor, and newspaper editor and reporter. Something all these roles have in common is being able to get up to speed on complex topics or systems quickly, then finding simple and succinct ways to explain them to users. Here are a few times I've done just that:-I designed an orientation course for adult students, then revised it using feedback; a course deemed "helpful" (16%) or "very helpful" (83%) by 99% of students -I designed a new onboarding flow to a learning model that participants in a UX study rated 26% more useful than the original flow -I regularly wrote detailed tutorials to help staff design and build consistent, high-quality learning experiences, including documenting the complex processes required for ~150 people to manually migrate 1,200 courses from one LMS to another
Listed skills include Copy Editing, Copywriting, Proofreading, Social Media, and 16 others.

Ux Content Designer
Senior Editor & Content Strategist
Current
Ux Writer
As the company’s sole UX writer until a mass layoff, I defined and crafted Oxygen’s product voice across its mobile and web applications. In this role, I:• Collaborated with product designers, PMs, and developers across 7 Agile teams to design clear, user-friendly content—from the earliest concept stages through to high-fidelity designs• Designed content for redesigned business and personal onboarding flows, a network referral program, virtual cards, money transfers, a virtual assistant, and identity verification flows• Conducted a content audit of the product voice, recommending (and later implementing) ways to improve its consistency and editorial polish• With Marketing, defined and documented the voice, personality, and various tones of the product
Ux Writer
In this role, I worked with an Agile team of product designers, UX researchers, other writers, and developers to build an online learning platform from scratch. This involved:• Collaborating with product designers throughout the product design cycle, providing content expertise on sketches, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes alike• Establishing processes for effective collaboration between designers and writers • Working with UX researchers to craft usability tests and surveys to measure the effectiveness of designs and content• Writing concise, clear microcopy (e.g., tooltips, error states, field labels, headers, instructions, labels, CTAs, confirmation & destruction modals)• Being competent enough at Figma to make designers' lives easier • Establishing standards for tone and style to use across our team's products• Documenting component usage guidelines in the design system• Constantly considering how to make content accessible to all usersAs a UX writer, I cared about both the nitty-gritty details and the big picture. Not only did I think about what a button should say or what kind of error message users would find most helpful, but about what students needed to know at different stages of their journey, and how to translate that into compelling, concise copy that got them where they needed to go.
Senior Learning Experience Designer/Learning Experience Designer
As an LXD, and later a Senior LXD, I worked with stakeholders across departments to come up with creative solutions to improve the student and faculty experience in different SNHU learning models. I did things like:• Developing proofs of concept in the learning management system for new online learning experiences • Improving existing learning models by gathering and acting on feedback from users• Offering creative and logistical recommendations to team members on the design of learning content• Establishing visual standards and language to create a unified look and feel across a learning experience• Developing detailed documentation and style guides to help internal teams and vendors develop contentSome notable projects I worked on include: • Helping design the academic student experience of a new accelerated one-year master’s degree program, including designing and building an orientation course to introduce students to the unique model • Revising select first-year courses for campus students who studied online in their first year due to COVID-19• Presenting at D2L’s 2020 Fusion conference: Embracing the Feedback Loop: How SNHU Gathers and Applies Feedback to CBE• Joining the CBE RISE team, which was tasked with making data-informed decisions to SNHU’s competency-based learning model to improve student performance
Content Editor And Architect, New Learning Models
In this role, I: • Managed a working group of 10–15 people during the months-long migration of 1,200 graduate courses from one learning management system (Blackboard) to a new system (D2L’s Brightspace)• Developed clear, extensive documentation on how to migrate content from one LMS to another for non-technical employees who had little to no experience in the LMS• Created a comprehensive, 80-page guide explaining how to design and build new competencies in the updated College for America program based on interviews with 20-plus stakeholders
Content Editor & Architect, Snhu Accel
As the team's only content editor and architect, I copy edited materials for all courses in the SNHU Accel format, an alternative learning model pilot. I also:• Resolved editorial queries with the instructional design team and vendors• Built new SNHU Accel courses in the learning management system and maintained existing SNHU Accel courses each term to make sure they reflected the most up-to-date content and policies• Worked with instructional design team to develop standard language and templates for SNHU Accel• Tested course components to make sure they were working correctly and worked with external vendors to resolve technical issues
Content Editor I/Ii
As a Content Editor I, I copy edited SNHU course materials for grammar, consistency, and style. I also made plain language edits so materials would be clearer for students and faculty, and worked with instructional designers and course builders to resolve issues. And as a Content Editor II, a role I moved into in August 2015, I also reviewed the work of freelance and new editors to provide coaching and ensure their work met established standards.
Proofreader
For almost a decade, I was a proofreader/copy editor for various Yankee publications—including, at different times, New Hampshire magazine, Parenting New Hampshire magazine, Bride, New Hampshire Business Review, and other specialty publications. I edited for grammar, house style, consistency, and formatting.
Assistant Editor
At NHBR, I interviewed, researched, and wrote daily stories and in-depth features for both the biweekly print edition and nhbr.com. I also: • Edited all copy before going to press for spelling and grammar and thoroughly reviewed printed page proofs for correct placement of advertisements, proper formatting, and layout• Posted stories online and updated the online events calendar in our content management system• Wrote advertising copy and scripts for NHBR’s multiple awards programs• Managed the surveying, fact checking, and creation of NHBR’s annual custom specialty publications• Updated the paper’s social media feedsSome notable achievements include: • Being awarded the New Hampshire Department of Resources and Economic Development’s 2013 “Commissioner’s Award for Media Excellence”• Growing NHBR’s Twitter following from 1,200 to 4,500 followers • Overseeing the overhaul of the 2014 Business Services Guide and 2014 Book of Lists• Appearing as a studio guest on NHPR’s “All Things Considered” and “The Exchange”• Appearing as a guest on multiple panels; moderated “Does Crowdfunding Move the Needle for NH Startups?” at Idea Greenhouse in Durham, NH in 2012
Staff Writer
Editorial Intern
In this internship, I checked all stories for publication by calling relevant sources and through independent research, then writing detailed revisions for errors. I wrote feature stories and magazine clips on a wide range of subjects, from fly fishing to weddings to coastal Maine's dining scene. Other occasional responsibilities included compiling events calendars, reviewing page proofs, and any host of minor duties that inevitably arose in the different stages of the publishing process.
Copy Editor
I copy edited, fact checked, and acted as occasional section editor, which included selecting photographs and writing headlines, decks, introductions, body copy, and captions. I thoroughly reviewed printed page proofs before the magazine was published to catch any errors, and put together a detailed calendar of events.
