Teaching has been my dream since I was a child but when I became an educator, I felt that I was called to do something more, so I took up another course that is also dear to me, Community Development Work. Through this course, I am able to serve my purpose in a larger capacity and not just in the four walls of the classroom. My experience as a placement student in Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) has exposed me to the different sides of Community work: from engagement, community economic development, partnerships, outreach, and more. As a teacher, I have learned curriculum development and individualized learning plans as well as I taught both in the classroom and one-on-one setting. Combining community work and literacy is my passion because learning to read and write is a fundamental right and not a privilege.
