With 12 years of research experience, I am a passionate and driven Assistant Research Scientist at the University of Maryland (UMD), where I both perform and supervise cutting-edge research on the dynamics of biological systems, with a focus on neuroscience. My academic research in neuroscience has been motivated by the challenge of understanding the complex mechanisms that regulate neuronal development, function, and plasticity. I value collaboration, innovation, and diversity, and I strive to contribute to the UMD's mission of advancing knowledge, discovery, and learning. I now seek to bring my skills to industry to have a broader impact on human health, ideally but not necessarily in the area of neuroscience. As an Assistant Research Scientist, I work in the laboratory of Prof. Wolfgang Losert, where I manage a high risk/high reward Department of Defense (DOD)-funded project to integrate living neural networks with hardware and software components. When I was a Postdoctoral Associate in the Losert laboratory, I led an international collaboration that discovered how non-neuronal glial cells use cytoskeletal dynamics to respond to extracellular stimuli. Throughout my research, I have developed novel data analytics and generated creative experimental solutions to address ambitious research questions. I do not shy away from complex, difficult projects -- rather, the opposite -- as is evidenced by my publication record (13 peer-reviewed publications). Additionally, I am an enthusiastic mentor and take my leadership roles seriously, having mentored 22 trainees ranging from high school students to PhD candidates. I have strong skills in neuroscience, programming (MATLAB/Python), data analysis, and communication, and I excel at sharing my findings and insights with the scientific community and the public.

Graduate Research Fellow, Firestein LabRutgers University Jan 2012 - Jul 2017New Brunswick, Nj, UsDissertation title: The role of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor in the regulation of dendritic arbor morphology, neuronal network activity, and neuroprotectionMy dissertation work in the Firestein laboratory was funded continuously by internal and external fellowships. For my research, I investigated the mechanisms of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), one of the most well-studied regulators of dendritic and synaptic plasticity. BDNF is also known to be a pro-survival factor and is overexpressed in neurons that survive injuries, such as ischemia. By culturing hippocampal rat neurons in vitro, I explored how BDNF shapes the dendritic arbor of single neurons and the dynamics of neuronal networks, both during development and after injury. -
Undergraduate Lab AssistantShvartsman Lab Jun 2010 - May 2011Princeton, Nj, UsSenior Thesis: Revealing the Patterning of the Terminal System in the Drosophila Embryo • Generated mutant flies with minimal amount of maternal signals and performed fluorescent in-situ hybridizations (FISH) to compare patterning of gap genes in mutant flies compared to wild-type flies. • Found that the simplified genetic system of the mutant embryos revealed a more complex interaction than previously known between two important genes in early embryogenesis. -
Summer InternSignum Biosciences, Inc Jun 2009 - Aug 2009Princeton, New Jersey, Us• Performed database searches to compile and summarize relevant articles for Business Development Department on whether a particular protein could act as a drug target. As a final project, these findings were presented to the department. • Demonstrated communication and presentation skills in interactions with superiors. Displayed ability to research, synthesize, and comprehend large amounts of information for presentation.
