This research project of my own design was funded by the Irish Research Council through the EU's Marie Curie fellowship scheme. Our particular COFUND division was called CARA during my application round; it has since been re-named ELEVATE. During the first two years I was posted to the University of Dundee.The main products of "Memorialising the 'Killing Times': History, Religion and Nation in pre-Enlightenment Scotland" are a book manuscript, a contribution to a co-edited source reader, a conference panel at the North American Conference on British Studies (Montreal, 2012) and a website indexing a series of eighteenth-century letters.The Wodrow Project website documented an early stage of the project, but is now being re-developed to show the full correspondence index.Some accomplishments:• Won €289,745 [$383,000] in competitive EU funding for three-year project and supplementary award in 2014.• Transcribed and analyzed several thousand eighteenth-century manuscripts and hundreds of secondary sources for use in forthcoming book and for development as open-access database.• Presented research nationally and internationally for organizations including BBC Radio Ulster, Maiden City Festival (Derry), International Association of Scottish Literatures, North American Council on British Studies, Queen's University Belfast, University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, and Bangor University.• Wrote draft sections of two books (currently in revision for publication) and several conference papers.• Developed and taught an upper-level undergraduate course in Scottish social history. • Kept records of expenditure and reported biannually to national funding body.

In this role, based at the UCD Humanities Institute, I joined a small team working on an Irish Research Council project, "Protestants, print and Gaelic culture 1567-1722", under Dr Marc Caball as principal investigator. Some responsibilities and achievements:• Investigated historical Irish-language translation initiatives as member of a research team.• Developed own strand of the research agenda, wrote and published a journal article.• Wrote and edited relevant sections of reports to the funding body.• Planned and hosted workshops, guest lectures, and the concluding conference in collaboration with the team.

• Coordinated seminar team for required upper-division Historiography course with 100-120 students, eleven sections and three other teaching assistants.• Taught about thirty seminar hours personally for this course offering.• Kept consolidated records of attendance and grades.

During my graduate study, I was sole teaching assistant for a lower-division undergraduate survey, Early Modern Ireland (1500-1800) and one of a team for two offerings of Historiography, an upper-division required course.• Led seminars, which included choosing source excerpts and designing reading lists.• Marked assignments and served as first point of contact for students.• Provided tailored study and writing advice and recommended additional reading material.

This was an evening part-time position, teaching adults. It was incredibly challenging, not only because the number and abilities of the students varied from night to night, but also because successful language classes need a lot of well-planned interaction and varied activities. I learned a number of techniques that transfer easily to other types of classrooms. The experience was shorter than I would have liked, as I had to give up the job later that summer in favor of some intensive research time in Belfast.• Taught intermediate and advanced adult levels.• Developed teaching aids and exercises to complement curriculum.• Adapted lessons at short notice to accommodate student and school needs.

TCD Library is one of a handful of copyright deposit libraries in the UK and Ireland, with very extensive holdings. During the academic year 2004-5 I worked early morning shifts as a shelver, mostly in the science library. The following summer I was employed as a temporary full-time worker on two of the Library's summer projects.• Re-organized the arts and humanities periodical collection and re-located some parts.• Processed a newly acquired foreign language collection, which involved physically preparing volumes, capturing or creating MARC records and adding entries to library's database.

This was a summer job during a family visit between my junior and senior undergraduate years. My responsibilities were fairly standard for the position:• Welcomed clients and other visitors and operated switchboard.• Prepared frequently used tax and property forms.• Typed correspondence and briefs from Dictaphone.
