For two years I was a reporter in Philadelphia before venturing out to Los Angeles to try my hand at the normal 9-to-5 desk job. I found my passion is in both helping people and writing, so when I moved to Denver, I started freelancing for the Denver VOICE while working as a barista—brightening and caffeinating people's mornings and helping the homeless through my writing. After a year of slinging shots and pounding the keyboard, I took over the direction and editorial of the VOICE. Being Executive Director and Managing Editor of the VOICE was a welcome challenge, giving me invaluable hands-on experience in nonprofit management—from fundraising and event planning to staff and board management. I value collaborations and found myself naturally connecting people to the VOICE and heightening their investment.After freelancing with the Westword, covering homeless issues, coffee shops and restaurants in Denver, and completing a cover story on Denver's ten-year plan to end homelessness which was published in November 2014, I dove into Grant Writing. I worked for a Boulder nonprofit managing about 80 grants a year, and bringing in about $1MM annually, at the end of my term.In 2018 I was fortunate to transition to the giving side of grant making. I now work as the grants and database administrator for a foundation that provides $6-8MM in grants each year. I am working my way toward a certification as a Salesforce administrator and love coming up with tools for streamlining our process for staff and our grantees.
