Director, Software Product Engineering, Data Sciences PlatformBroad Institute Of Mit And Harvard Aug 2021 - Oct 2024Cambridge, Ma, UsI was a founder of the Data Sciences Platform whose principal product is Terra, a cloud-native platform that manages 80 petabytes of data from over 3 million participants, has run more than 35 million workflows consuming 5 billion core hours of analysis, and is used by more than 40,000 users in 50 countries globally for biomedical data analysis, secure sharing, and collaboration.I created the data engineering group and scaled it from a single team of 6 engineers to 40. This group moved Broad Genomics' high-throughput pipelines from an on-prem operational environment (5,000+ compute cores in heterogeneous blade servers, 7PB of clustered disk storage, multiple management VMs) to the cloud (GCP, Google Pipelines API, Cromwell, WDL). My teams collaborated with Broad scientists, lab personnel, management, and IT as well as external partners (Verily, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute) and scientific organizations and consortia (NIH All of Us Research Program, Human Cell Atlas, NHGRI AnVIL, NIH BRAIN Initiative, ENCODE).As a member of the Product Leadership Team, I drove adoption of the product operating model, facilitated cross-team learning, and ensured alignment with organizational strategy through roadmaps, coaching of managers and teams, and targeted training. I led the work stream to implement Terra on Azure, ensuring successful collaboration across product, engineering, and customer success teams and the on-time delivery of private preview, public preview, and GA releases. I partnered with sales and professional services to ensure that the organization successfully delivered on commercial opportunities. Through sustained personal networking and attention to recruiting practices and policies I improved the diversity of our engineering teams (>50%) delivering impactful outcomes for users. -

Manager, Pipeline Development And Operations, Genomics PlatformBroad Institute Of Mit And Harvard Jul 2012 - Jan 2016Cambridge, Ma, UsI joined a team of four in the Broad’s Genomics Platform as an engineer building pipelines to process data coming off one of the largest installations of Illumina sequencers in the world. I developed many of the tools in the Picard open-source suite of Java command-line utilities (now part of GATK) used in major sequencing pipelines world-wide and oversaw a multi-year strategy to reduce the storage cost for sequence data by a factor of 4. As the team grew, I created, staffed, and managed a separate operations team that was responsible for service uptime, troubleshooting, and stakeholder engagement. I was awarded the Broad Institute's Excellence in Engineering Award for my work in developing and operating a novel pipeline that gave collaborators more rapid access to sequencing services and data (“walk-up sequencing”). -
