Today, in the era of big data, the potential of machine learning is remarkable. Yet, we face many challenges with our data. It is often unstructured, scattered, incomplete, and frequently varies considerably between different sources. I am passionate about data standardization, streamlining the aggregation process, and ensuring that data is not only accessible but also primed for analysis. My goal is to create a conducive environment where data-driven decision making can thrive and to bridge the gap between raw data and the scientists eager to translate it into breakthroughs. I am a data scientist at Pfizer where I lead a team of programmers implementing data pipelines to automate biomarker data quality control, enhancing data accessibility and expediting decision-making processes in clinical trials. I am also a co-founder, and board president, of Diversity in Data Science, a newly formed non-profit group focused on supporting and building diversity in data science, and other data-related fields. We provide educational opportunities to empower minorities and marginalized groups, with our flagship event being the annual Women in Data Science Puget Sound Conference. In my remaining free time, I enjoy gardening, painting, reading, and board games.

    The Cambia Grove Innovator Fellowship was an 8-week full-time fellowship with Cambia Grove and Fred Hutch. I was one of two fellows in the inaugural cohort and worked on (i) aggregating reference data into a cohesive data catalog and (ii) building a workflow to visualize single-cell RNA sequencing experiments on the web, leveraging cloud computing tools. Our first project was to pool data sets from 25 sources into a standard biological data catalog that can be accessed through consistent web-optimized application programming interfaces (APIs). Some of the sources that we pooled include: • Gene and ClinVar information from NCBI • PubMed articles• Pathways from Pathway Commons• Gene annotations from GeneCards Together the data now stored in our data catalog is 2 terabytes and is publicly available to researchers and non-profits. The second project we worked on was to build cloud infrastructure to support single cell RNA sequencing analysis. Our solution allows researchers to run multiple methods of analysis (i.e. seurat, scanpy, monocle3) simultaneously in the cloud and compare results via websites with collaborators who are not familiar with programming. Our system utilizes a workflow manager called Nextflow (https://www.nextflow.io/), docker containers, and the AWS ecosystem (S3, Lambda, and Batch).

    During my PhD, I studied approaches to regenerate the pancreas and cure diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is caused by a lack of functional beta cells, the cells that produce insulin. My aim was to find a way of producing more, or regenerating, functional beta cells. In order to study regeneration, I first looked at how the pancreas naturally develops. I identified a population of cells in newborn mice that regulate the beta cells’ ability to (a) divide and (b) become fully functional. Furthermore, I identified a protein that controls these effects which can now be used to develop a new treatment for diabetes.
