Beginning in April 2012, Mike served a 2-year term as the President of the Alaska Arc User Group (AAUG). AAUG is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for training, techniques, exchange of knowledge and data among the users of Esri software and related geospatial services.

Helped in completing EPA Source Water Assessments for over 1700 of the State of Alaska’s public drinking water systems. Each water system required GIS-based watershed and groundwater analysis as well as area-wide mapping. In addition, this project involved the maintenance of a large GIS database as well as the development of an Intranet application to provide program members access to the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS) database. During this time, I was also part of a team that negotiated a contract with a software vendor to develop an application to assist water system operators in completing required reporting to the State.

Supported the GIS / modeling needs for various water resource engineering projects. 1) Municipality of Anchorage (Watershed Management Section) Performed surface water runoff analysis using the EPA Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) in support of the MOA’s NPDES storm water discharge permit. Provided support in the development of GIS data used in the runoff modeling efforts. Provided mapping services as needed. 2) City of Wasilla Performed runoff modeling and GIS analysis/mapping associated with the development of a storm water management plan for the City of Wasilla. 3) Lake and Peninsula Borough Performed watershed delineation and mapping of the Kvichak river drainage for the Lake and Peninsula Borough in support of their development of a watershed management plan. Developed a website that allows online interactive access to mapping data for the watershed area4) Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) Aided in the design and implementation of a large-scale legacy data conversion project for the LADWP. Aided in the development a GIS storage framework as well as an AutoDesk MapGuide interface for use by all water resource staff in the LADWP Bishop office. Provided GIS data development and preprocessing for EPA MODFLOW groundwater modeling efforts.

West Palm Beach, Fl

Performed field data collection of wetland boundaries and elevation using Trimble GPS units. Performed GIS mapping using esri ArcView software. Also performed runoff quality and quantity modeling, and non-point source modeling using the ArcView 3.x interface for the USDA Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to assess roadway design alternatives to alleviate an ongoing seasonal flooding problem in Martin County, Florida.

Swaziland, Africa

Served a high school math/science teacher a rural Swazi high school under the Cambridge O-Level syllabus. Also implemented changes to the school's gravity fed water system in cooperation with the community. Conducted seminars with new Peace Corps volunteers concerning the Swazi educational system. Organized scholarships for needy students.
