As Director of the Center for Global Studies, my mission was to develop and implement academic opportunities that connect students with global experiences so they may better see themselves and their communities as a complex interweaving of natural, cultural, sociopolitical, and economic forces that move beyond geopolitical borders and to create an academic space for students to rigorously engage with difference. To that end, I launched the Concentration in Global Studies, an innovative curriculum that brings together traditional coursework with high-impact global experiences (e.g., curated off-campus studies or internships) and rigorous analysis and reflection. I supported faculty development and recruited visiting educators to broadly enrich Whitman's academic program with global studies. I fostered partnerships with various constituencies, e.g., the Office of Off-Campus Studies, and capitalized on the O'Donnell Visiting Educator Program to support my efforts.

Research on the fabrication and application of optical biosensors to monitor electrical activity in the intact mouse brain.

As a research technician in the Department of Anatomy, I used histological techniques combined with light, confocal and electron microscopy to monitor development and differentiation of ganglion cells in the skate retina.

I worked in the laboratory of Dr. Robert Paul Malchow in the Ophthalmology Department, using electrophysiological techniques to characterize the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of quinine and quinidine on GABA transporters in skate retinal horizontal cells.
