Sam Knight is a retired high-tech businessman/engineer whose post-retirement career is as a passionate advocate of UC San Diego alumni/student engagements serving as coordinator, moderator, and occassional panelist on topics about life after graduation. Sam spearheaded the "Alumni 101" series workshops to give students guidance on life after studies. He has served as mentor for entrepreneurs at the UCSD Basement, Institute for the Global Entrepreneur, and iCorps. In his more than forty years in industry, including vice president at LocationSmart delivering cloud-based location based services, directing international marketing for Copper Mountain Networks (DSL) and wireless data technologies (CDPD and PHS) at Pacific Communication Sciences, Inc./ADC Wireless. He also directed product development and business capture for imaging and computer aided design companies Encad/Kodak, Megatek/Ball Systems, GE/Calma, and Control Data Corporations.Sam holds a degree in Applied Physics and Information Science from the University of California, San Diego (1973). He is deeply involved with the University of California, San Diego, serving on the Alumni Board of Directors, UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering alumni council, Student Foundation Board member, and has been an advisory board member of the UCSD Library, director of the Society for Concurrent Engineering, and chair/member of UCSD’s Chancellor Associates Faculty Excellence awards committee.Sam is an avid swimmer and a regular user of UCSD’s Canyonview swimming facilities and has participated in the annual La Jolla rough water swim event for more than thirty years. His wife, Pam, holds a masters of education from UCSD and is a retired teacher of exceptional qualities in the Poway Unified School District.
