The Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Learner (IDEAL) Research office aligns innovation and impact in biomedical research by cultivating a diverse and equitable community at Penn through hosting research intensive summer and post-baccalaureate research programs for marginalized individuals as well as recruitment programs to enhance our reach. Fellows engage in facilitating these programs year-round. As the Recruitment Lead Fellow I am responsible for implementing new and improving old recruitment strategies and material, as well as attend national conferences for recruitment.

My thesis work is funded by the March of Dimes through the Prematurity Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania. This center launched in 2014 and is one of five prematurity research centers (PRCs) focused primarily on prematurity research. Our work broadly aims to understand why deficiencies in mitochondria in the cells of the placenta and maternal reproductive tissues may be contributors to preterm birth and other adverse pregnancy outcomes. Outside of wet bench research, my role includes presenting my work to the scientific board at our annual site visits and to the other PRCs at our annual symposium as a collaborative effort to address prematurity in the US and abroad.

Research-based PhD training in Pharmacology with a focus on Black maternal health at the intersection of Social Determinants of Health

As the Head of Community, I served as a liaison fostering a relationship with the biotech community in Philadelphia as well as partnerships with grade school students interested in the intersection of biology and technology. Additionally, I was responsible for recruiting and selecting a diverse pool of applicants to our Activator Program and managing teams throughout their matriculation.

Nucleate is a global, student-led organization that facilitates the formation of new life sciences ventures. As the Head of Diversity and Culture, I was responsible for recruiting a diverse cohort for our Activator program, managing teams, and creating an efficient and conducive learning environment for PhDs, MBAs, and MDs interested in pursuing a career in biotechnology startups.

The Pharmacology T32 predoctoral training grant, funded by the NIH, is a two-year training program that aims to provide a multifaceted doctoral program that incorporates cutting edge research and a curriculum that provides both depth and breadth. This curriculum is designed to prepare students as leaders in their respective disciplines. Trainees receive additional funding for Pharmacology conferences as well as mentorship and training activities

Under the virtual Summer Undergraduate Internship Program, I worked in the lab of Dr. Rebecca Simmons studying the differences in RNA from maternal blood of women who delivered full-term versus pre-term births.

I worked in the lab of Dr. Yusuf Omosun, looking at the proliferation and pathological effects of Chlamydia trachomatis in a female mouse model.
