I am also interested in the technical and socio-economic aspects of renewable energy and electric/autonomous vehicle systems.I have huge experience of customer-facing (pre-sales, support and consultancy) roles and systems/network development and architecture roles in a wide range of IT and networking environments, Daily Newspapers, and academic institutions. Senior Solutions ArchitectNominum Aug 2010 - Nov 2017During this 7 year period I was been proud to be part of the team that conceived, developed, made early deployments and ultimately achieved wide adoption of the "N2" system, providing carrier class DNS service plus in-network threat mitigation, anti-malware service, parental control and content filtering, and in-browser messaging.The DNS is the "right place" to do fine-grained user access control, DDOS and botnet protection, and customer messaging. Every application must interact with DNS, and there is no need to pass all traffic through complex and expensive DPI or firewall devices.Customers include all but one of the "big five" UK ISPs, plus major ISP/Telcos in EMEA, APAC, LATAM and North America. The capabilities of the Nominum system require involvement of operations, network design, customer product management, customer support, product marketing and senior exec areas of all customers.I am a co-author of several US Patents relating to the design and function of the Nominum N2 system.I was a core member of the team responsible for responses to very detailed and time-critical RFx documents issued by the largest customers.During 2016 I acted as liaison from Nominum and UK customers to the Home Office advising on technical/policy options for end user internet security, crime prevention and detection, child exploitation prevention and detection and related matters.Nominum was acquired by Akamai Inc. in November 2017, and I took the opportunity to move on.In the UK N2 systems now cover the great majority of consumer broadband connections. Around the world a high percentage of ISPs and Telcos have adopted the N2 system. -

Interaction with routing and switching platforms was critical. Capacity Planning rules were essential to ensure service stability under rapidly increasing traffic. Senior ConsultantInktomi Corporation Jan 2000 - Dec 2002Reporting to: Director of Consulting, Northern Europe.Architecture, implementation, rollout and production commissioning of customer projects using Inktomi's product suite (Traffic Server web/media cache, Content Distribution Network, Content Networking Platform). Responsible for customer training in the EMEA region.A wide range of technical and non-technical skills were required to successfully implement projects. In addition to Inktomi's product suite this has required my input on matters including hardware and operating system choice and detailed configuration, custom scripting, transparent caching architectures, origin server content problems, routing and bandwidth issues, and site preparation/installation. Nightowl TechnologyWith a former consultant to High Level Hardware I formed Night Owl Technology to develop a high performance PC based X Terminal. This was technically, but not commercially, successful, and as it was a spare time activity for all involved it was terminated when time and resources were no longer available.

Field Service EngineerLinotype-Paul Ltd Feb 1985 - Dec 19892-1/2 years resident at Mirror Group Newspapers-2 years as sole resident engineer in Cairo, primarily at Dar-al-Maaref publishers. In all cases the primary function was support of minicomputer and typesetting systems, but the Cairo posting involved the full range of site preparation, installation, training, and operation. Local conditions and staff resources were very poor, and UK support very remote. I gained considerable experience in all these aspects of operating sensitive hardware in a very adverse environment.My primary site was the least well funded of five, and was the only one to achieve full production within the time allotted.
