I used MS SQL 2005 -2012 for back-up and restore, trouble shooting and monitoring, SQL to improve admin scripts and Dev/Uat for testing during restore.Key achievementsTogether with members of the team, I helped to build a comparison to the production tool to track changes in UAT pre-release that might affect reporting and produced a ‘load report’ indicating how long it took to execute on production. I worked within the team to solve problems when a vendor application split the Prod database into two. We solved the problem by creating a middle tier to accommodate exting reporting, that would become redundant in due time, while the new DW and ClickView are being implemented over time for reporting. We also extracted XML data into the DW with certificates, with a powershell script from Partner Data.

My responsibility included preventative database maintenance and environment improvements, replication and data movement.I was accountable for functions such as back-up and restore, release locks, troubleshooting, monitoring, Bash and SQL scripting, the refresh of server data and the creation of databases on Sybase ASE and Replication server for both CAMAF and Resolution Health. Utilising inter alia, DBArtisan, Power Designer (merging data models PDM, LGM etc.), BIPS, DMMS, Talend, as well as OS – Windows Server 2008,Solaris 5.1 and up, SUSE 10, SQL-MS SQL 2008, Sybase 12.5. upgrade to 15.5.Key achievementsUpgraded all our environments from Sybase ASE 12.5 to Sybase ASE 15.5, including Sybase ASE Replication server.I scripted Sybase ASE the restore process 99% with Bash that asssisted in the in a efficient refresh from Prod to Dev\Test and UAT environment enabling the testers to complete testing faster.Management made a decision before my engagement to change the database behind iMed to Microsoft SQL Server, so we migrated the database from Sybase ASE to Microsoft SQL Server for implementation on a customer site. The customer had existing data on mainframe, so task comprised the extraction, transformation and loading of all the data.

Database AdministratorSybase Dec 2008 - May 2010Johannesburg Area, South AfricaI was outsourced to Standard Bank CIB as one of a Sybase team of five DBA’s working on Sybase ASE and Bash scripting. We were also tasked to maintain the environments for MUREX (trend analysis for currency and stock), Andisa and other databases. We therefore refreshed the relevant environments, released locks and wrote scripts to improve the bank’s technical environment.At the same time, I set up back-ups with crontab, UNIX scripts and NetBackup – ensuring that the back-ups were kept for 60 days. I monitored logs by scripts and sent mails and sms‘s to the DBA group and assisted with MS SQL-side of activity when the team was short of resources. Tools utilised for the work included ISQL, putty for UNIX, terminal sessions, awk, sed and grep, DB Artisan and DB Designer.Key achievementI learned Sybase ASE (the MS SQL’s parent) and Solaris within 2 months. I learned a lot about teamwork and banking environments.
