Avo Media makes documentary, educational, and branded content - and our speciality is communicating science and other complex concepts in a clear, engaging way.

The SciCATS are a group of Vancouver-area science communicators (and cat fans) committed to making science communication training accessible to everyone. As one of the original members of SciCATS, I volunteer with a team of science communicators to make free, online workshops to teach scientists and students how to better communicate their science. I also lead in-person presentations and workshop at a variety of educational events and scientific conferences.

I write, edit, manage and curate blog posts from UBC faculty, staff and students for the Faculty of Science’s online publication, Focus

I produce video and photo content from across Canada highlighting Actua's STEM education work with underserved, rural, and Indigenous youth. I develop and deliver STEM education for youth across Canada.

I am dual appointed as a video production coordinator at Geering Up Engineering & Science for Kids and eng•cite. Geering Up is a student run STEM summer camp and outreach nonprofit. eng•cite is the working name of the Goldcorp Professorship for Women in Engineering at UBC. The Professorship is a vital aspect of the UBC Faculty of Applied Science’s efforts to promote the engineering field to young women.As Video Production Coordinator, I am responsible for creating, shooting, editing, and producing a variety of video and photo projects for Geering Up and eng•cite. I also have had the opportunity to lead outreach trips to rural, underserved, and First Nation communities across British Columbia to excite kids about science and engineering. For these trips, I have produced short documentaries about our work.I am responsible producing and editing weekly vlogs for the Engineering Stories YouTube channel. I work with out team of vloggers and video producers to brainstorm, script, shoot, edit and share the vlogs on social media.I am also responsible for producing short documentaries about Geering Up's outreach work, as well as videos to share with sponsors, parents, and funders.My favourite project to work on has been the Spotlight series. For Science Literacy Week 2017, my co-producer and I created a series of short documentaries highlighting incredible female engineers. We wanted to show people — especially younger women — the variety of people who can be scientists and what it really means to be a scientist.

During my time as the sports editor I started The Ubyssey's science section which has since grown into it's own a part time editorial position.I am responsible for setting the editorial direction of The Ubyssey's science section. This included managing a team of volunteers and staff writers to develop daily web content and monthly print content, producing multimedia stories, editing writer's stories, teaching journalism to interested volunteers, managing social media accounts, editing and pitching stories, taking photographs, and writing stories.In starting the section I was responsible for developing it's voice, breadth, and focus.During my time as editor I covered research at UBC and beyond, science-oriented student groups and clubs, popular science, design teams, science startups, and conferences on campus and beyond.I worked with the editorial board to manage the daily and longterm viability of the paper.All of the science section was developed after completing my responsibilities as sports and rec editor.I worked full time as an editor while being a full time student at UBC.

This included managing a team of volunteers and paid staff writers to develop daily web content and weekly print content, producing multimedia stories, editing writers stories, teaching journalism to interested volunteers, managing social media accounts, editing and pitching stories, taking photographs, and writing stories.During my time as editor I covered UBC's Vanier Cup winning football season, the CIS Final 8 Tournament, Storm the Wall — the biggest intramural event in North American, Day of the Longboat — the largest voyageur canoe race in the world, and many, many other stories.I also work with the rest of the editorial board to manage the daily and longterm viability of the newspaper.I worked full time as an editor while being a full time student at UBC.

During my two months at WBUR's CommonHealth, I covered health and science stories ranging from e-cigarette use in teens to a "Shark Tank" like antibiotic development incubator based at Boston University. I worked on writing daily breaking news stories and longer, analytic feature stories. My feature on teen use of e-cigarettes was shared by NPR's main social media channels.

Geering Up is a science and engineering camp for kids entering grades K-12. As an instructor I was responsible for developing a curriculum for the summer, teaching and caring for my campers, and managing a classroom. I also had the opportunity to teach in underserved neighbourhoods in downtown Vancouver and Prince George, BC. I worked with a team of other instructors, all students, to run the camp.
