I worked for 7 months as an intern in the Nuclear Energy Directorate (DEN), more specifically in the Laboratory of uranium fuel (LCU).In the production process, the UO2 powder flows in a pipeline. The UO2 powder falls in a hole (press die), it is compressed and then heated. Thus, we obtain the nuclear fuel pellet.In this context, I studied especially flow and compaction of granular material generated by vibration. I had to find the best vibration conditions that enable the UO2 powder to flow as fast and fluidly as possible. Thus, more pellets can be produced in a day.Before my study, a PhD student, Arnaud Benedetti, designed an innovative experimental reproduction system to study the flow of the UO2 powder. He set up this experimental mechanism in a glove box. I had to put the device into service. I wrote two procedures: one for the use of the vibration test bench and one for the use of the high speed camera. I made movies of the flow and compaction of the UO2 powder. Then, I worked with a PhD student, Jean-Eric Mathonnet. I showed him how the experimental system works and my first results. We found promising results but it is confidential.
