College Works Painting is a company that gives students the opportunity to run their own business through an internship. The process went in three steps: marketing, sales, and production. Our district managers kept in weekly contact with us and gave us strategies that we could implement to be successful. I created a marketing plan by identifying my target market in certain areas of my territory and creating the most effective direct marketing route. I would then do door to door marketing and explain who I was, what services I offered, and how I could help them out. The next step was sales. I would then call all of my leads and set up appointments with them. I would typically be going to school, tutoring, and marketing on weekdays, so I would set up 10 or so two hour appointments on the weekends. I would then go and do personal sales presentations at the prospect's house. Part of this process included me walking around the house and constructing a bid from some measurements and formulas to come up with the best price. If I booked the job (which for me was 55% of the time), I would place them in my production calendar for the summer. Step 3 was production. In this phase, I learned a lot about customer service by remedying customer complaints and providing the best customer service possible. At the same time, I had to plan for materials, worker schedules, hiring, making sure projects were being completed on time, transporting equipment, and managing two crews at once (often spaced an hour apart). Out of the three phases, I enjoyed sales the most. I booked roughly $52,000 in paint jobs in 3 months.With this internship, I gained valuable skills in marketing, sales, time management and team leadership just to name a few. The internship prepared me to be a business owner and really tested my abilities to push myself. Most weeks I worked 70+ hours per week, sometimes more.

As a business and economics tutor, I gained experience in personal communication, organizing and presenting materials, and teaching others. For this position, I had to take an education class that explained how different people have different ways of learning, and therefore some learn by different methods. I consistently used this in my tutoring by getting to know my long term learners and understand their personalities and their preferred way of learning. For the kinesthetic learners, I would often draw graphs on whiteboards and ask them to redraw the graph, or I would try to use objects in the room as representations of concepts. For visual learners, I would use the whiteboard for concepts, but use different colors. Related concepts were similar colors. For auditory learners, I would try to make the learning more conversational and ask them questions and quiz them about concepts verbally. By being a tutor, I was able to take a leadership role and be able to help others with their learning and give instructions for better studying habits to ultimately lead the learners to becoming a better student. This position also helped me to reinforce the same business and economics concepts I had already learned in class.

I performed routine checks and Random Anti-terrorism Measures (RAM's) to ensure that the Air Force Base was secure. I also performed Law Enforcement duties: patrolling, setting up speed traps, and responding to dispatch calls. I obtained a valid security clearance for this career field that is still in effect.
