Full Professor Intelligent Energy Systems
CurrentFull Professor Intelligent Energy Systems in the Electrical Energy Systems (EES) group of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TUe). Principal scientist in intelligent energy systems research and education. Research focus is on smart grids and, more specifically, the application of intelligent software systems, Artificial Intelligence, in (electrical) energy systems in the broadest sense. These intelligent techniques include distributed systems, cyber-physical systems, complexity science and data science. With the team at EES, we focus on two research lines present in the group: distributed intelligence for power systems control & coordination, and data science & machine learning as applied to energy market trade and power systems operations.
Part-Time Professor Electrical Power Systems
Part time professorship (hoogleraar) in power systems control and coordination. Special focus is on the major challenges faced at the distribution grid level in the energy transition. Unleashing the large potential of prosumer flexibility located in the distribution grids is a key prerequisite for a successful energy transition and to accommodate the related ongoing electrification trend (electrification of transport, industry and heating). This professorship is part of a long-lasting cooperation between TU/e and TNO. At TNO, this professorship falls under the Energy R&D Roadmap "Towards a Reliable Sustainable Energy System" and is partly financed from TNO ICT. At TU/e, the professorship is part of the Intelligent Power Grid section of the Electrical Energy Systems group.
Part-Time Researcher
Part-time researcher in the Electrical Energy Systems group of the Electrical Engineering department. Setting up a joint research program between TUe, TNO and other partners on smart grid coordination, especially related to complexity science and distributed computing.
Program Director
CurrentHeading a consortium of 9 knowledge-intensive companies and 6 knowledge institutes developing a techno-regulatory transition pathway for the electricity ecosystem on the level of the distribution grid. The main driver is that we realize that the way value-chain partners in the local electricity system jointly adopt digital technologies, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the way the legislator allows them to do so, are key for the success of the energy transition.
Senior Scientist Smart Electricity Grids
Broad-based scientific expert and integrator in the field of smart electricity grids. Heading multidisciplinary research teams within cooperative projects and internally at TNO. Performing high-level consultancy assignments for utility companies aimed at application and transfer of innovative smart grid knowledge. Advisor to a broad range of smart grid research and innovation projects performed by TNO and industrial clients. Contributing to TNO's strategy and research program development. Co-supervisor of two international PhD students.
Senior Scientist
Research Fellow working in the Energy System Operation and Management group of DTU's Center for Electric Power and Energy (CEE). Research focus is on integrating renewable and distributed generation into the electricity system through distributed computing techniques, combining control engineering and computational intelligence.
Visiting Scientist
Part-time Visiting Scientist position at DTU Center for Electric Power and Energy (CEE).
Researcher
Part-time Researcher (50%) until July 2008 and Visiting Researcher from then onwards. Research in Information Science and Artificial Intelligence applied to intelligent energy infrastructures. Leader of the ICT-architecture design task in the FENIX project. Expanded the theoretical basis under the more applied research performed at ECN and TNO. Supervisor for several Master Thesis projects. Received a PhD for the work on PowerMatcher
Research Coordinator Smart Grids
Scientific coordination of "Energy Management and Distributed Control", one of the two priority areas in ECN's multi-annual research program "Intelligent Energy Networks". Responsible for the research and technological output of the priority area. Monitoring and steering of 10 researchers, scientific programmers and engineers, working on 10+ EU & NL-national and third-party projects. Initiating and leading project acquisitions and technology commercialization. Flagship technology: PowerMatcher Smart Grid Technology. Annual research budget: 1.5 Mio euro (2010).
Senior Researcher
Researcher and Project Manager in Smart Grids, integration of Renewable Energy Sources in the electricity network, virtual power plants and intelligent control mechanisms for electricity grids. Team member and project manager of cooperative projects involving collaboration between industry, university and R&D institutions. Involved in successful project acquisitions.
Sustainable Energy Scientific Research Engineer
Until January 2005:Software engineering and scientific programming involving system modeling and intelligent software techniques such as neural networks, fuzzy logic, Bayesian networks and genetic programming. Projects: day-ahead forecasting of wind power output, day-ahead forecasting of combined heat and power (CHP) production, design and implementation of ICT-based control systems, data-driven modeling of catalytic chemical processes.
Scientific Programmer
Scientific Programmer at the Traffic Research Centre developing software for an instrumented car used for traffic behaviour research.
Visiting Researcher
Worked for five months as a Scientific Programmer at the Computer Science Dept. of the University of Essex, United Kingdom. Development of system software for dedicated hardware for knowledge-based systems (the IFS2) in the research group of professor Simon Lavington..
