About Koen Milis
I started my career in academic research at the faculty of applied economics. My career has taken me to a fairly wide range of places. Especially sharing my experience in academic research (Information Systems & Statistics) as a lecturer in Dubai & Tilburg during several years was a great experience. From 2010 until 2020 I was the CEO of Campus Vesta, the Safety Education Centre of the Province of Antwerp where they educate, train and inspire Police men, Fire Fighters, First Medical Responders and Disaster Managers. I realised the merger of police and the firefighter / ambulance driver academies. In 2020 I took up the position of director general of the Belgian civil aviation authority (BCAA / DGTA / DGLV). ⁞ ⁞ ⁞As a leader I combine analytical skills and understanding of the sector with a creative strategic vision. I value face-to-face interpersonal communication and negotiation. For me the most important working relationships are based on a mutual problem-solving and inspiring attitude. ⁞ ⁞ ⁞I navigated both Campus Vesta and the BCAA through the mazes of corporate restructuring and created a cultural shift towards cohesion and multidisciplinary collaboration. To improve organizational effectiveness I’m continuously aware of the strategic distinctiveness of our departments. Through mediation I built bridges and create mutual goals.⁞ ⁞ ⁞I’m driven by a positive attitude. After my working hours I have the luxury to work out in our fitness or to run a few miles. I adore running on Bach or classic rock. You can often find me at the airport of Kiewit. Flying an airplane is my ideal mindfulness training.

With a team of nearly 100 permanent staff members & more than 750 freelance instructors we provide high standard safety & security education.We believe in the right man on the right spot. That's why all our freelancers are coached by a team of pedagogues. We look further than stars and stripes. At Campus Vesta talented young police professionals can educate experienced Fire Officers on how to use social media on the field. Experienced judges share their inspiring case studies with police students. While medical emergency nurses teach first responders how to reanimate infants. Etc. By education we bring people closer together. This way we create better cooperation on the field between aid workers. Furthermore, every year, we welcome more than 6.000 participants for corporate incident first response workshops, communication trainings, CPR, etc.We sensitive for trends in the society. Often that means we have to challenge our sector. That's why for instance we organize special trainings for police officers on minority groups, enabling them to better interact with a variety of different people. Moreover, together with University of Antwerp, we created the postgraduate programs Disaster Management and Advisor Hazardous Materials. Thorough education and training for people who need to take decisions when disaster calls!
