I assisted with conceptualizing new research proposals, conducting literature reviews, drafting data reports, and implementing data analysis techniques for projects centering social determinants of cancer prevention behavior.

I served as an assistant for Dr. Esther Ellis, the Territorial Epidemiologist for the U.S. Virgin Islands. I conducted field research on long term joint pain resulting from prior chikungunya infection among local residents. My daily tasks included administering phone and in-person interviews, collecting biological specimen for genetic analyses, and data entry. In addition to the research study, I worked with the CDC-operated Zika Emergency Operations Center assisting with monitoring the Zika telephone hotline and tabling at community outreach events to spread awareness about Zika prevention.

Directed by Dr. Wendy Book, the EAACHD project is part of a CDC-funded pilot study in conjunction with the New York State Department of Health and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to conduct population-based surveillance of Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) in the United States. As a Research Assistant, I will conduct data integrity checks, apply data management methods, review medical records to recognize and correctly classify CHD diagnoses and other medical conditions, and engage in data cleaning on the data collected. We partnered with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Seedco, Enroll America, and Georgia Refugee Health & Mental Health to implement the Affordable Care Act in underserved communities. I was federally and state certified to inform families about the new law, local health care resources, and later dispatched as part of a four member team of counselors to advise over 300 refugee and immigrant clients about enrolling in appropriate health insurance plans to best suit their needs. My work included making outreach cold-calls, enrollment pre-screening interviews, managing enrollment appointment lists, and follow-up assistance.

I interned for the Zoonoses Team within the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine in the National Center for Infectious Diseases. My primary responsibility was assisting the team veterinarians and epidemiologists with entering and cleaning up data from 10 years of backlogged animal importation records into the Quarantine Activity Reporting System.
