In 2012 I was in my second year at the University of the Fraser Valley. I had never done any computer programming or even really knew what it was. It never occurred to me how software was developed. During this year of school I was still trying to figure out my major and I took my first computer programming class. It instantly clicked with me and I never looked back! In 2013 I transferred to the University of Victoria to complete my computer science degree while also completing 4 co-op work terms. In 2017 I graduated from the University of Victoria with a bachelor of science in computer science.Since then I've been working as a software developer for Cloud Practice. During this time I've worked with frontend frameworks such as AngularJS, VueJS, and Rails. Backend languages such as Java and Ruby. I've built various utility scripts using Bash and Ruby. I've also worked a lot with PostgresSQL developing queries to extract information about our users and product for business needs. On the infrastructure side I've worked with VMs, AWS, and Docker.My proudest accomplishment so far in my career was migrating an application running on VMs in a self managed datacenter to AWS. I migrated the application to an Elastic Beanstalk environment and migrated the database to an Aurora PostgreSQL RDS instance. The Elastic Beanstalk environment was composed of EC2 instances that would autoscale and load balance. The environment also included an EFS volume that would be shared across EC2 instances so that all instances would have access to the same file system which would contain files such as user uploaded documents. To prepare for the final migration, I gathered metrics on our previous VM infrastructure using Datadog. I then tried to simulate those metrics in the AWS environment using a load testing software called Locust. By doing this, I was able to adjust the AWS environment resources to support our user traffic so that when the migration occurred, users would not see an interruption or decrease in performance. In the end, the migration was completed successfully with only minutes of downtime for the users. This project took a lot of planning and learning and took months to finish. In the end it was a success and a huge accomplishment for myself.My primary interests are in web application development and infrastructure. I also enjoy figuring out how to write simple scripts to do complex or repetitive tasks.
