In particular, Kong used the combination of a whole-room indirect calorimeter and advanced-accelerometers to accurately measure physical activity associated energy expenditure in heterogeneous populations including healthy and obese individuals (adults and children), as well as patients with different metabolic diseases such as diabetes, Prader Willi Syndrome, Sickle Cell, end-stage kidney disease, cancers, bariatric surgery, and others. Currently, he serves as the director of Human Energy and Body Weight Regulation Core of the NIH Clinical Center, and a clinical investigator of the Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Obesity Branch of the National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney diseases. Kong’s current focus is on the energy expenditure responses to a range of environmental temperatures around the thermal neutral zone. Kong is also collaborating with scientists in the US, Iceland, Sweden, Portugal, Japan, Brazil, Australia, Kuwait, and China in physical activity and obesity related research studies.
