Responsible for the Energy Strategy of R&D within Transnet. This included project planning, business case compiling and approval, execution of R&D and new product development projects. Projects included renewable integration into railway system, energy storage implementation in wayside and on-board applications including regeneration, alternative fuels application including hydrogen, natural gas and other viable alternative fuels, projects for energy efficiency improvement in plant and rail operations including control algorithms, and more, and the development of systems engineering models for each of these technology areas.

Responsible as lead electrical systems engineer for the Trans Africa Locomotive development project. This systems engineering role required me to develop system models for modelling integration requirements and determining tests and verification parameters for the ultimate product. This lead to the development of a Train Energy Simulator code, that was developed to demonstrate the ability of the new locomotive on various routes. The modelling included all detail of auxiliary, traction power draw and parasitic and other losses on the vehicle, create an active energy balance representation for the TAL.

Test engineer for locomotives, including extensive heat run and radiator testing. Product design engineer and commissioning responsibilities on Rail Crane acquisition.
