The software connected to a variety of data repositories throughout the enterprise, built a database of individuals known to the company and mapped the locations where the data on each individual is stored. Took over leadership of the engineering team that has been through several leadership changes in a short period of time. Rebuilt and strengthened the team, growing it to 16 engineers across backend, UI, DevOps and QA functions.Managed across multiple timezones, with part of the team located in the Greater Seattle Area, part of the team in Ukraine and contract work happening in India.Created a new architectural direction for the product and devised a path for a gradual transition from the legacy architecture, while continuing to support existing customers.Guided the team in adopting engineering best practices, such as working branches, Swagger code generation and automated integration tests.Designed an implemented an extensible and scalable system for extracting data and metadata from data repositories through a common API that hides system differences. Through this system, data repositories as diverse as Oracle, MongoDB and CSV files on a file share could be read in the same manner.

My team covered tooling for Oracle Cloud, WebLogic Server, GlassFish, Coherence and Oracle Database.Contributed to and led several Eclipse open source projects, served on Eclipse Technology Council and negotiated with Oracle competitors on evolving Eclipse IDE functionality to serve the common goals.Designed and developed Eclipse Sapphire, an open source framework for creating complex data models and rendering sophisticated forms and diagrams with minimal specification. Sapphire was instrumental in enabling rapid development of complex editors for XML configuration files, such as those used by WebLogic.Designed and developed Faceted Project Framework for Eclipse Web Tools Platform which allows users to mix and match capabilities enabled in a project while ensuring that the project stays within the constraints of the target runtime.

    Worked on WebLogic Workshop IDE prior to transition to Eclipse. Improved the project model, the build system and the deployment logic.In collaboration with the WebLogic Server team, designed and developed a system for running a Java EE application directly from the development project structure, without copying of artifacts or bundling of files into archives. This greatly improved the speed of iterative development.Was part of the transition of the WebLogic Workshop from a proprietary IDE to a set of plugins built on top of the foundation of the open source Eclipse IDE. A major portion of this work involved collaborating with BEA's competition on the development of Eclipse Web Tools Platform (WTP).Developed an Ant-based build system for WebLogic Workshop projects that leveraged the project metadata to control the command line build. This avoided the need to regenerate the build scripts after every project structure or configuration change.

    Nimble was a startup, building a data integration platform. The software would connect to disparate data repositories, build an integrated schema and let developers issues queries against this schema. The schema was hierarchical to allow structured (relational databases) and semi-structured (XML) to be integrated. Initially, XML-QL was used for querying, but it was later replaced with XQuery.Joined the company as the first employee after a senior research project that was a proof of concept for what Nimble ended up developing. My project advisor at the university became one of the company's founders. Worked on many components of the system, such as the distributed architecture, query parsing, query compilation, execution plan optimization, and the metadata repository.Designed and developed a proprietary binary XML encoding that greatly sped up the transport of query results by using a dictionary to encode repetitive XML tags.
