Specifically, the project focused on how an aircraft is expected to perform based on several control inputs. Current work in attitude estimation relies on combining sensor data from various sources such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, and Global Positioning System. However, additional information from known control inputs, such as pilot controlled inputs and the geometry of the aircraft is not currently being utilized. All of this additional information serves to improve estimation accuracy, assuming that the uncertainties in the data are properly modeled. Techniques from the field of aircraft parameter identification, which aims to accurately determine the aircraft model, was investigated and combined with existing sensor fusion architectures in order to improve the estimation of the attitude of an aircraft. Within the estimation process, a discrete-time filter called the Kalman filter was utilized as the primary method for securing accurate results. This was done utilizing different equations of motion derived from aircraft dynamics in conjunction with the programming tool MATLAB, which is especially powerful in dealing with complicated models. This research project was presented at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research in April of 2015.
