Koosha Dab is a coral biologist, the Senior Expert in Marine Ecology and Head of Ecology Group at the Centre for Sustainable Development and Environment (Cenesta) and Co-coordinator for Marine and Coastal Areas for West and Central Asia at the ICCA Consortium.Koosha holds a Master’s degree in marine biology. He has worked in the fields of coral taxonomy, coral reef conservation and restoration, underwater photography, professional scuba diving, protected area management planning, environmental impact assessment and environmental policy since 2007. Since 2013, he has been actively involved in coral reef conservation programmes in collaboration with the Iranian National Institute for Oceanography, as well as promotion of CBD’s Aichi Biodiversity Targets using interdisciplinary approaches, the implementation of IUCN governance types of protected areas (especially ICCAs) and the promotion of community-based and multi-stakeholder approaches in the conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems at CENESTA (funded by two European Commission Grants). I was the organizer and representative of NGOs for the elaboration of the second CBD National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP) of Iran.He was the representative of Iran for the identification and designation of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s EBSAs (Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Areas) in the North-West Indian Ocean and the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea (six approved EBSAs).In addition, he has been working with indigenous and local communities of the Northwest Indian Ocean and the Caspian Sea in the process of recognition of their marine and coastal ICCAs (Indigenous and Community Conserved Territories and Areas) by UNEP-WCMC with the aim of meeting the minimum 10% conserved areas to help Iran meet its CBD’s Aichi biodiversity targets 11,18 and UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14. He has authored numerous articles on marine and coral reef conservation.
