In this role, I am a part of a brand new team of individuals who work directly with Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) divisions to advance equity work within the organization. I support division leadership as they integrate, implement, and track progress on MDH’s strategic health equity goals with a focus on building capacity in the public health system and community organizations, ensuring equitable and inclusive data practices, enhancing authentic community engagement, facilitating system change, change in public and private policies, procedures, and practices to eliminate structural inequities, and advancing equitable resource distribution.

As a part of the 2021 cohort of the Public Health Administration Program (PHAP) through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, I was selected to work at the Minnesota Department of Health with a focus on Health Equity for two years.In this position I:- Served as a subject matter expert on health equity activities, process improvement, and data analysis standards for the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease division - Researched scientific literature to develop conceptual model of how health inequities are created to identify future opportunities to creatively reduce inequities for cancer programs- Authored official recommendations and statement for the Division on structural inequities in state granting process using policy, reports, and other documents- Facilitated discussions with I-Health and HEAL advisory committees to assist in decision-making and addressing issues related to health equity at the Department- Engaged internal and external stakeholders for the Minnesota Governor’s Supplemental Budget focused on Disability as a Health Equity Issue in the 2022 & 2023 legislative session- Innovated standard processes with continuous quality improvement and project management principles to improve effectiveness of equity efforts for state and federal government- Managed projects to award, oversee, and evaluate $90,000 in funds for health equity projects under direction of health promotion and chronic disease division director- Facilitated, evaluated, and analyzed health equity training opportunities at the division and department level under direction of multiple assistant commissioners and division directors

In this position I led the immunization program for high-risk patient populations across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Florida, and Virginia. My primary roles and responsibilities included:- Developed, implemented, and evaluated, and project managed to expanded patient immunization access resulting in an immunization clinic increase of over 400% - Defined and communicated program outcome and evaluation data analyses to chief clinical officer, chief executive officer, and cross-functional physician-based meetings - Used outreach strategies to build and nurtured collaborative relationships with external partners to ensure the success of the influenza and COVID-19 immunization program - Incorporated project management skills to ensure immunization program success which began as a beta test in Minnesota and was rolled out across all states- Established COVID-19 data cleaning, quality assurance, and reporting processes

Under professor Susanne Jones, I studied and coded conversations between 90 couples about an upsetting event. This was in an effort to assist with her communication studies research on supportive couples.

In this role, I assisted with the daily tasks and basic operational functions of the Veterinary Diagnostics Polymerase Chain Reaction Lab. This included processing samples, assuring that equipment was sterilized, and sorting files to ensure clients received all details needed. Further, I assisted with training other student lab assistants to produce a consistent quality of work.
