I am currently on a one-year assignment with the Labour and Employment Law Group, located within the Treasury Board Secretariat Legal Services Unit. My primary responsibilities include: (1) representing the employer in the adjudication of labour relations grievances and staffing complaints before the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board; (2) representing the employer in appeals of decisions of no danger before the Canada Industrial Relations Board; and (3) representing the employer in responding to applications for judicial review at the Federal Court.My substantive legal position is on the Aboriginal Law Team within the Aboriginal Law Centre. My responsibilities include conducting legal research and writing legal opinions in the area of Aboriginal law; reviewing legal opinions written by legal counsel in Legal Services Units; providing litigation support by reviewing pleadings and advising on legal positions; and delivering legal training in Aboriginal law to Department of Justice legal counsel.Prior to joining the Aboriginal Law Centre, I worked as legal counsel in the Social Services and Issues Section of CIRNAC/ISC’s Legal Services Unit. In that role, my responsibilities included conducting legal research and writing legal opinions in the areas of Aboriginal, constitutional, and criminal law; providing litigation support by reviewing pleadings and advising on legal and policy positions; preparing legal risk assessments for Treasury Board Submissions and Memoranda to Cabinet; assessing legal risks of various policy options for Indigenous health legislation; drafting or assisting in the drafting of briefing materials to senior officials; and attending and presenting at client meetings.
