Polypropylene is one of the most common plastics which assumed a huge place in our everydaylives due to its low cost and variety of mechanical properties. These properties are determined by the polymer microstructure which is influenced mostly by the nature of the catalyst. New single-site catalytic systems are constantly being sought aiming at plastics of modified properties that may find new applications.Salalens are tetradentate dianionic sequential {ONDO}-type ligands that include two neutralamine-type N-donors and two peripheral anionic arms. During my PhD studies we introduced numerous structural modifications to the Salalen skeleton which could lead to catalysts of either high isospecificity AND to catalysts of high activity at polymerization of propylene or other alpha-olefins, combining these two features.
