Conducted avian surveys for the Oil Sands Bird Contact Monitoring Program at Syncrude Canada’s Mildred Lake and Aurora oil sand mines. Duties included conducting land and boat-based surveys in tailings ponds; hazing birds using pyrotechnics and other means; assisting oiled bird ID; and daily reporting to Syncrude and Owl Moon.

As an independent contractor, I purchased and delivered groceries for customers in a professional manner. I went out of my way to communicate with customers when I needed to inquire about an appropriate replacement when items were out of stock, or of inadequate quality. When communication with the customer was not possible, on-the-fly decision making skills were vital when finding suitable replacements. Time management and being able to plan ahead were also valuable skills that make for a more efficient workflow and positive experience for the customer. After shopping, I made sure that grocery items were sorted appropriately and kept in cooler bags when necessary. I then promptly delivered the order to the customer's residence, while adhering to COVID-19 safety protocols (both during delivery and shopping).

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Working under Dr. Boyd Mori in the Entomology lab, I assisted research on a then-undescribed species of midge (currently classified as Contarinia brassicola, or the Canola Flower Midge) that utilize Canola plants as a host during their reproduction. The main objectives were to determine whether or not the midge negatively impacted the maturation of Canola flower buds, and to what degree; to determine the phenology of the midge; and to develop a potential pheromone-based monitoring tool. Field work was a weekly occurrence during my placement and lasted up to 14 hours. During these field workdays, my partner and I were tasked to drive out to multiple different Canola fields hours away from Saskatoon in order to collect samples from the emergence traps and pheromone lure experiments we had previously set up. Canola plant samples were also collected from each field for developmental inspections. Back at the research station, the emergence trap, pheromone experiment, and canola plant samples we collected were examined meticulously. Our data was compiled into an Excel spreadsheet for analysis, annotated with the detailed field notes I took. Other tasks I had include collecting sweep net samples, identifying and sorting the insects found within those samples, and assisting the other projects conducted in the lab.At the end of this Co-op placement, I had gained experience with field work, lab work, insect handling, insect identification, data collection, and data analysis through software.Competencies I had improved upon include teamwork, communication, responsibility, problem solving, research and analysis skills, biology knowledge, and professional behavior.

As a Bird Banding Summer Student, I helped facilitate various avian monitoring projects, which included the MAPS, Fall Migration, and Hummingbird monitoring projects.The purposes of bird banding include tracking the movements of individual birds during migration; gauge population trends; assess species composition, health, and productivity; and to help determine the longevity of individual birds.Every banding session started a half hour before sunrise, where we would set up the mist-nets that we use to catch birds. The nets were checked every half hour, and the birds that we caught were safely extracted and placed into cloth bags in order to be transported back to the banding station. During the MAPS banding sessions, I specialized in banding and recording the morphometrics of hummingbirds (rufous and Anna's); during Fall Migration, I banded other species of birds as well, mostly passerines. Data that we collect were recorded on-site onto an Excel spreadsheet or on paper. I also helped monitor Purple Martin nest boxes at various locations in Greater Victoria , which involved climbing up to the boxes (some several meters high) and checking each for the presence of eggs and/or nestlings. The nestlings were aged by size and the eggs were counted.Skills that I had gained and improved include bird handling, hummingbird banding, passerine banding, bird aging and sexing, safe bird extraction, wildlife surveying, biological field work, using biological field research equipment, data entry, ability to work in various weather conditions, nest box monitoring, volunteer training, and visitor/public education.Competencies that I had improved upon include biological (ornithological) knowledge, field work skills, teamwork, communication, and the ethical and safe handling of wildlife.

Lethbridge, Alberta

Under the supervision of Dr. Karen Koenig and lab technician Rena Roth, I worked primarily in the animal nutrition lab where I facilitated research on the digestibility of various cattle feed. The bulk of my time was spent preparing and processing hundreds of forage samples for the analysis of their digestibility, utilizing various and specialized laboratory equipment.For the purpose of simulating cattle digestion in-vitro, I collected rumen gut flora samples from cannulated cattle. The forage samples (sealed in filter bags) and gut flora samples were incubated in Daisy II incubators for a few days. A Neutral Detergent Fiber assay was then conducted on the "digested" forage samples using Ankom 200 fibre analyzers. Most of my time working in the lab was done without supervision. Coming in on weekends to check the status of the running laboratory equipment was also a regular part of my duties. Other duties of mine included cattle fecal and urine sample collection; analyzing cattle urine samples for nitrogen content; gut bacterial sample nitrogen analysis; fixing broken lab equipment; and assisting the experiments of other labs. At the end of this Co-op placement, I had gained experience with lab work, professional laboratory equipment operation, working with cattle, data collection, attention to detail, and data analysis through software.Competencies I had improved on include teamwork, communication, responsibility, working independently, problem solving, research and analysis skills, biology knowledge, and professional behavior.

I assisted research on arthropod and mollusk pesticide development, primarily through pesticide experiment assistance and entomological colony maintenance.The various colonies that I helped maintain included colonies of diamond-back moths, two-spotted spider mites, green peach aphids, meal worms, American cockroaches, leather jackets, house flies, and odorous house ants.Other duties included planting and maintaining various insect food sources in a greenhouse (kale, radish, collard greens, etc.) and collecting live European chafer and slug specimens in the field.
