Discovery Software Ltd. develops and sells software. Its main products are STEMgis, a 4D temporal geographic information system (GIS), FloodRanger which is an educational game looking at the management of flood risk over the next century and CoastRanger MS, an educational tool for managing the effects of climate change on coastal erosion and flooding. Discovery Software Ltd. also develops bespoke software for many different customers, including the NHS, Environment Research companies, Estate Agent, Defence and others.Discovery Software has also developed webbookings (in conjunction with web-bookings.net), an online booking system for squash and tennis courts and fitness classes. • Geokronos Ltd
    Director
    Geokronos Ltd Apr 2000 - Feb 2002
GeoKronos Ltd was setup to develop and sell the STEM software. The software was developed from the results of a research project into a commercial product complete with database management, visualization and publishing software components. Major contracts with UK research and industry establishments in the coastal/marine fields helped to develop the software further. As the chief programmer/developer I further developed my skills in Visual Basic, installation scripting, active data objects (ADO), active scripting pages (ASP) and the extensible markup language XML.
  • Plymouth Marine Laboratory
Leader Of A Knowledge-Information-Technology (Kit) Group
Plymouth Marine Laboratory Nov 1998 - Apr 2000
The KIT concentrated on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and databases and developed a system to provide GIS access to all CCMS scientific data to all CCMS staff. Other research interest in the group included software development, coastal zone management, airborne remote sensing (ARS) and artificial intelligence
  • Plymouth Marine Laboratory
Leader Of The Gis/Ars Group For A Project Called Lois (Land-Ocean Interaction Study)
Plymouth Marine Laboratory May 1995 - Nov 1998
Software development of STEM, the Spatio-Temporal Environment Mapper which is a GIS system that allows a user to visualize data that varies through 3D space and time, in a user-friendly manner. All environmental data is stored within an Access database designed around a generic relational data model. STEM has enabled the novel visualization of data not possible in other GIS packages. This project involved the collation, reformatting and loading of widely varying environmental data from some 250 scientists spread around the country.Another main area of work involved the processing and use of airborne remote sensing data. Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI), Airborne Thematic Mapper (ATM) and stereo aerial photography.
  • Plymouth Marine Laboratory
Manager Of The Nerc Remote Sensing Unit
Plymouth Marine Laboratory Aug 1992 - May 1995
Based at the University of Plymouth, I ran the Remote Sensing and GIS Unit. The main task was to provide computing and scientific support to remote sensing and GIS projects at the University and at PML. These ranged from the proposed siting of a new reservoir in Cornwall, through the mapping of geological lineaments in the South West, to the monitoring of phytoplankton blooms in the Atlantic Ocean. I was system manager for 2 Silicon Graphics and 3 Sun workstations, 2 VAXs, an I2S, 10 PCs and various printers, cameras and digitizing tables. The application packages used and supported included Arc/Info, ArcView, Erdas Imagine, I2S, AVS, IDL, ImageVision, R-Chips and numerous PC packages including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Corel Draw. Programming involved image processing in C, cshell, X Windows and the Arc Macro Language (AML).
  • Department Of Geography, University College London
    Research Associate
Department Of Geography, University College London Dec 1988 - Aug 1992
Part of a research project investigating the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function in remotely sensed images, i.e. the way that objects on the ground reflect light differently depending on the angle at which you view them. The work included C, SunView, X Windows, and cshell programs for image processing and visualization of ATM data, field data, and the calculation of satellite viewing parameters.During this time I also undertook a part-time PhD – Mapping three-dimensional geological structures from airborne remote sensing and elevation data. This used ATM data and elevation models derived from topographic maps to deduce geological structures. A knowledge-based system and 3D visualization package was developed using C, cshell and X Windows. The PhD was completed in 1994.
  • Joint Air Reconnaissance Intelligence Centre (Jaric), Raf Brampton, Ministry Of Defence
    Remote Sensing Scientist
Joint Air Reconnaissance Intelligence Centre (Jaric), Raf Brampton, Ministry Of Defence Sep 1986 - Dec 1988
Responsible for the design and development of an image processing workstation. Experience of PC image processing, VAX VMS, I2S and GEMS image processors.
