Laboratory Research Assistant, Department Of Geography & The Environment
CurrentAs an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the Butzer and Beach Soils & Geoarchaeology Laboratory, I prepare soil samples and perform a variety of analyses, including phosphorous extraction (Mehlich II extraction solution), pH, Munsell color, magnetic susceptibility, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), loss on ignition (LOI), particle size analysis (PSA), carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios, elemental analyzer, and partial digestion for inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). My current focus is on material (soil and water samples) from the Peruvian Andes. Under my project supervisors Dr. Timothy Beach and Dr. Luzzadder-Beach, I aim to find ecosystem functions in peatlands that emerge in the Little Ice Age zone of three mountain glaciers.
Archaeology Technician
From June to July 2023, I took part in the Belize Estates Archaeological Survey Team (BEAST), conducting excavations to understand the evolution of the Ancient Maya civilization based on newly-received LiDAR images. My responsibilities included accurately documenting all artifacts and structures found in each unit, including ceramics, obsidian, architecture, and other materials. I am currently working on end-of-season reports describing our discoveries.
Administrative Assistant - St. Austin Catholic Parish’S Outreach To Persons In Need Program
As the Administrative Assistant for St. Austin's Outreach to Persons In Need program, I ensured that this ministry could serve residents of the Austin area seeking rent or utility assistance via remote means (phone and email) and in-person in our parish office; I communicated with program guests to aid in completing their application, explain eligibility requirements, and answer questions about assistance that we can provide. One of my main responsibilities was to assist the Director of Social Justice Ministries and the rest of the Outreach Leadership Team in running administrative tasks for the program; process and file administrative emails, resources, and forms in Outreach database; and provide technology support to program volunteers. In addition, I interviewed guests seeking assistance and completed guest paperwork to go into our database. I often interviewed our Spanish-speaking guests or provided translations for our team so that all information is effectively communicated during their assistance.
Communications Coordinator
As the Communications Coordinator for the Campus Environmental Center (CEC) at UT, I managed the CEC communication channels, including the e-newsletter, social media, and website. I was responsible to create clear and consistent messaging with the CEC Director, Staff Advisor, and Project Team Leaders. In addition, I created graphic and written content to promote CEC events. Apart from the main CEC leadership team, I managed my own Communications team comprised of graphic designers, blog writers, and video editors. As an overarching objective, I, along with our leadership team, worked to promote sustainability in campus as well as in our local community.
Campaign Worker
At Y Strategy, I educated community members (400+ residential homes) about the voting process during my canvassing and call shifts. During this, I documented information regarding all required metrics and call results, including information such as the voters’ candidate of choice.
Undergraduate Research Assistant, Tc310 Modes Of Reasoning Medical Problem Solving
Before taking on the position as Undergraduate Research Assistant, I received a nomination for the position to due to my level of approach in Modes of Reasoning Medical Problem Solving class. This opportunity allowed me to continue my research and experimentation on graphene fabrication through ambient-air synthesis while engaging one-on-one with students to develop research strategies for their independent projects. During this process, I guided students in the class in exploring new ideas for future projects and further developed connections to be used by the class.
Environmental Policy And Communications Intern
As the Environmental Policy and Communications Intern at Save Barton Creek Association (SBCA), it was my responsibility to upkeep the organization’s website and social media content, flyers, and other policy materials. I wrote the e-newsletter alongside the Executive Director. In addition, I assisted with research and writing related to SBCA’s environmental advocacy efforts; for example, I drafted SBCA’s official response to HB 4146 and SB 1747 during the 2021 Texas State Legislative Session. Specifically, I worked with SBCA’s No Dumping Sewage campaign alongside our Wastewater Campaign Organizer to push the pristine streams discharge ban. I also helped organize events for the Save Oak Hill campaign against TxDOT’s Oak Hill Parkway project, which would build a large-scale highway that would present potential hazards to the Barton Springs Edwards Aquifer.
Outreach And Communication Specialist
During my time as Outreach and Communication Specialist at the Sanger Learning Center, I presented workshops and overviews of the Center to organizations, classes, First-Year Interest Groups (FIGs), and Transfer-Year Interest Groups (TRIGs). I suggested study tips, reading strategies, time management skills and general COVID-coping advice to UT students. I managed communications with UT staff facilitators and mentors via email.
Cashier Customer Service
As a cashier at Ace Hardware, I performed sales floor work, including greeting or assisting customers, stocking shelves, or taking inventory. I received payment by cash, check, credit cards, vouchers, or automatic debits. In addition, I issued receipts, refunds, credits, or change due to customers.
Guest Operations Crewmember
As a Crewmember in the Guest Operations department at Space Center Houston, I educated guests on current NASA programs and the history of space flight. I engaged in interpersonal and team building skills with an aptitude for building rapport with a diverse range of customers, managers, and colleagues; I quickly resolved issues prior to escalation. I answered an average 50+ questions per day from customers related to the museum and created custom itineraries for guests. Additionally, I operated the Virtual Reality machines, sold tickets, and kept a total count of the visitors that we received each day. I also played an integral role in operating the record-breaking interstellar celebration and concert during the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing at Space Center Houston on July 20, 2019.
