- Conducted social vulnerability assessments for five Great Lakes cities and developed a pilot tool and GIS maps to help Great Lakes city planners assess vulnerabilities to climate change impacts. - Led undergraduate interns in daily aquatic field research, assessing in-stream and riparian habitat and measuring and mapping physical indicators of stream health.- Taught K-12 students about stream ecology during stream-side programming events, leading small groups in hands-on water quality testing activities.

- Conducted research with a post-doctoral fellow studying novel heterotrophic nitrogen fixation in estuarine sediments. - Performed DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, cloning and qPCR to study the expression of dinitrogenase reductase genes (nifH) under various environmental conditions.

- Designed and executed an independent research project studying the effect of diet on biological iron regeneration in zooplankton.- Developed a method to measure zooplankton digestive vacuole acidity using a ratiometric fluorescent probe and confocal microscopy. - Prepared a scientific abstract, poster, and oral presentation for the Bigelow REU symposium and presented a poster at the American Geophysical Union's 2012 Fall Meeting.

- Participated in research on the population genetics of harmful algal bloom species, establishing and maintaining 100+ algal cultures, isolating and enumerating algal samples, and extracting and sequencing DNA.- Assisted researchers with monitoring spring algal blooms in the Nauset Marsh System, collecting water quality data and sediment samples from a small boat during weekly field surveys.
