During my engineering internship at AHEC, I was introduced to Australian Work Health and Safety, Australian design rules, Codes, Standards, and other relevant regulations that Australian Engineers use in their day to day practice. Over the period of the internship, I was assigned various tasks that expected me to provide numerous written, oral, and PowerPoint presentation responses to different engineering problems that were both in and outside of my area of practice. I also learned about Risk Management as a tool in Engineering and took part in several risk scenario assessments. Responding to these problems enhanced my soft skills and utilized my theoretical knowledge of different engineering principles within my area of practice. In addition, I was asked to formally respond to customers’ complaints and inquiries, and prepare reports. For the majority of the internship, I participated as a part of an AHEC Engineering project team. While working on the project I was able to demonstrate teamwork, critical thinking and evidence of ethical decision making. As an Electrical Engineer, I was asked by the Head of the Project to brief the team on issues that were within my area of practice. During the internship, we were also tasked with submitting a design proposal that used innovative technologies. In the proposal, we were required to demonstrate where we had employed/considered Safety in Design. This activity improved my knowledge in this area.
