My primary interest is in the transformative power of the Creative Industries, Higher Education and Citizen Engagement. I have been promoting, developing and discussing emerging technologies for societal goals, eg. in transdisciplinary innovation, responsible design, empowerment of (disabled) users, sustainable development goals, data commons and the doughnut economy. Throughout my career I have established partnerships and collaborations that combine the knowledge, experience and passion of the participants, working towards shared goals, using Design Thinking, The Art of Hosting, and other co-creation techniques.I have a background in Artificial Intelligence, photography and television, and I have ample experience in the conception and development of Public Internet Services, amongst which Kies op Maat. I have worked at the University of Amsterdam, the Dutch Digital University Consortium, Waag (Society), DesignLab University of Twente, and ISOC NL. Currently I am the Dean at the Faculty of Digital Media and Creative Industry at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, HvA. Next to this, I am a (supervisory) board member at V2_, Tetem and The Mobile City.I have been involved in the FES COMMIT and FES CRISP research programmes; the Topsector Creative Industries; initiator of Apps for Amsterdam, Apps voor Nederland and Apps for Europe; The Amsterdam Smart Citizens Lab and the EU programme Making Sense; PhDO (with Arne Hendriks); "Smart Erfgoed"; CineGrid Amsterdam; MuseumApp, and a multitude of other projects and programmes.I've spoken, written and lectured on Citizen Sensing, Open Innovation, Design Thinking, Open Data, Living Labs, 4K media, Sustainability, Fablabs, User Empowerment, Art-Science, and related subjects. Furthermore I'm a regular moderator and host for design and innovation events and workshops in the Netherlands and abroad.

Next to this, it hosts a cutting-edge applied research centre: CREATE-IT. Professors, lecturers, students and researchers conduct applied research in collaboration with knowledge institutes and the Creative Industries and IT sector. Finally, we just started The Digital Society School. It researches the impact of technology on society, develops the skills necessary to guide transformation and passes on knowledge and skills to a new generation of professionals. They are ready to work on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 - all over the globe.
