I worked as an Undergraduate Research Assistant in the Iwokrama Rainforests of the Guyana Shield and completed a lecture course on Guiana Shield wildlife and conservation and learned survey techniques. In traveling to the Surama Village forest camp, we conducted surveys on forest structure and dung beetle communities. At night, we conducted reptile and amphibian surveys on standard search transects by spotlighting, doing point counts. In addition we used mist nets and soundscape analysis to collect data on both bats and birds. We also conducted distance sampling to survey primates, patch occupancy, and set camera traps for jaguars, pumas and other large mammals. With the data collected, we were able to compare the biodiversity value of pristine wilderness sites to areas that have been recently logged or logged some years previously as a means of tracking deforestation and its effect on surrounding ecosystems.
