Responsible for macroeconomic research, asset allocation and interest rate and foreign exchange trading.

The portfolio manager role at First Sentier Investors (previously Colonial First State Global Asset Management) encompasses a wide range of responsibilities. Primarily this involves generating above benchmark returns over multiple time frames, through Australian and global rates alpha sources, as well as in the credit space via top-down macroeconomic views and bottom-up relative value calls. In addition there is a strong focus on portfolio design and risk management, as well as extensive hands on experience in portfolio construction across active and passive benchmark aware, asset and liability matching (including for superannuation and insurance clients) and inflation portfolios. Significant external involvement with investors and consultants has ensured that a 'putting client's first' mentality has been strongly entrenched.

The focus for this role was the execution of a broad range of investment strategies in the Global Fixed Interest and Credit team at First Sentier Investors (previously Colonial First State Global Asset Management). The responsibilities also covered hedging foreign exchange positions. The role additionally included a strong focus on reporting market positioning, liquidity and flows, as part of the process to develop market themes and trade ideas. Following Best Execution practices and process was also a significant feature of this role. Having worked in Institutional Rates and Credit Sales over an extended period allowed for a significant amount of cost savings and a number of new execution avenues to be successfully identified, for the benefit of the investors' portfolios.

A strong track record of building mutually beneficial relationships across a diverse institutional client base. The majority of this time was focussed on Australian clients such as fund managers, bank balance sheets and semi-government authorities, with a later focus on Asian central banks, offshore banks and hedge funds. The fixed income product knowledge demonstrated over this time included bonds across the investment grade spectrum and derivatives such as swaps and options. Exhibited an ability to drive business outcomes through the development of cornerstone interest in new issues and increased secondary market turnover, consistently exceeding financial targets as a result.

Based on the dealing room floor in NAB's London office, this role focussed on the timely provision of economic and rates strategy analaysis and forecasts. This required the development of a number of econometric models used to generate trade ideas. The responsibilities also included regularly presenting to a range of clients across Europe and to the media, as well as contributing to a range of NAB research publications.

This dealing room based role involved providing economic analysis and forecasts in a markets environment. This included the development of econometric models to forecast a range of economic and financial data, as well as contributing to various NAB research documents. External presentations to a range of corporate and institutional clients were also delivered.

Lectured in Graduate Diploma and Associate Diploma economics subjects for two years. Feedback consistently highlighted an ability to present the course material in a way that made it easier to understand.

As part of the graduate intake of 1998, I was placed in macroeconomic forecasting roles that focussed on the labour market and inflation. Forecasts were presented quarterly to a group which included the RBA and the ABS. Co-authored a paper on "The Macroeconomics of Australian Unemployment in the Treasury Macroeconomic Model", which was presented to the RBA and externally.
