Vibration And Acoustic Design ResearchSelf Sep 2011 - Dec 2015Since my senior year of high school, I have been continuously working on a mechanical vibration damping device for an automotive application. I have worked with numerous mentors including professional engineers, professors, and student colleagues. The problem has taken three solution paths: analytical, numerical, and empirical. I am still continuing to learn about the problem and how to solve it through independent studies and other extracurricular work. Analytical (Theory):•Researched and learned about fundamental theories and governing equations of vibrations•Investigated the relationship between human optics and visual perception of vibrations•Determined the fundamental frequency of a mechanical system in longitudinal and bending vibrations using beam deflection equations•Used mechanical and thermal parameters such as elastic modulus, density, and operating temperature levels to select multiple elastomer candidatesNumerical (Computer-based Solution):•Modeled a geometrically and FEA accurate baseline assembly in SolidWorks•Performed frequency analysis in SolidWorks to confirm beam deflection equations•Implemented the first 15 frequency modes of the system and performed linear dynamic analysis in SolidWorks to obtain the input-output displacement relations of the system•Attached an elastomeric design to the baseline assembly to represent the isotropic damping effects of selected elastomer candidates •Compared resonant frequency, linear displacement, and phase plots to determine the optimal elastomeric material for applicationEmpirical (Prototyping/Testing):•Performed mechanical vibration testing using accelerometers, sinusoidal inputs from a subwoofer, and diagnostic software to determine a criterion frequency range that dominates the system•Used experimental data to inspire a 3-D printed hybrid elastomeric damping device that limits the dominant longitudinal and bending frequency modes
