I am currently Senior Planning Manager for SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK Ltd, working on a nationwide basis but based in North Tyneside. My main responsibilities include the preparation and management of planning applications for recycling and recovery facilities and the promotion of residential and other land uses on redundant or closed sites.

From January 2016 until January 2018 I was employed as planning and estates manager for SUEZ Recycling and Recovery (formerly SITA UK). SUEZ operates a range of recycling and resource management facilities across the UK, including recycling, composting, refuse derived fuel production, wood processing, energy from waste and landfill. My responsibilities included the preparation and submission of planning applications for existing and new facilities and property/estates management.

South East Region

SITA UK is a recycling and resource management company operating a network of recycling and waste management facilities across the UK. The company has its own planning division split geographically. During this period I was employed as acting planning manager for the South East region as maternity cover. My responsibilities were to manage the planning process for a range of facilities in the South East region and to check and approve work from a junior member of staff.

SITA UK is a recycling and resource management company operating a network of recycling and waste management facilities across the UK. The company has its own planning division split geographically. During this period I was employed as Assistant Planning Manager in the North. My role was broadly that of an ‘internal consultant’ providing planning support and advice to the company either on operational or proposed sites. The facilities owned and operated by the company include landfill, energy recovery facilities, transfer stations, recycling centres, composting and innovative recycling plants. My main responsibilities included the preparation and submission of planning applications, management of consultants producing technical assessments, monitoring and making representations on planning policy documents and fulfilling planning responsibilities on closed sites which were being restored or were within formal aftercare. The core elements of work depended on the complexity of individual projects but usually involved the following: • Liaising with internal managers for background information on the proposal;• Organising pre-application meetings or discussions with the planning authority and drafting the application documents;• Commissioning and managing technical consultants;• Representing the company when planning applications go before committee;• Representing the company at public consultation events;• Managing the restoration and aftercare of closed landfill sites;• Implementing the EIA Regulations, preparing Screening and Scoping documentation;• Undertaking appraisals of planning permissions and development sites; and• Monitoring planning policy and submitting representations.

Fairhurst is a multi-disciplinary consultancy. The core business is structural and civil engineering, however, the practice also includes specialist divisions including Planning and Development. The planning and development division is separated into two teams ‘Major Projects’ and ‘Development Planning’. During my time with Fairhurst I worked within both teams on a wide range of projects, including:• Minerals and waste;• Road schemes;• City centre developments – hotels, student accommodation, retail etc;• Residential development ranging from 1 – 500+ units; • Wind farm repowering;• Schools;• Fire stations; and• Listed building works. The main responsibilities of the role included:• Researching the planning history, spatial and planning policy context of development sites;• Preparation of pre-application documentation, including EIA screening or scoping documents where required;• Organisation and attendance at pre-application meetings to outline and discuss proposals identify concerns and requirements and inform the working programme for a planning application;• The establishment of technical project teams, financial management and communication with consultants. • Project management of planning applications and Environmental Statements;• Preparation of planning application documentation including Planning Statements, Design and Access Statements, Retail Impact Assessments, Sequential Tests etc; • Attendance at public exhibitions and planning committee meetings;• Provision of planning advice to clients, either verbally or in a written format; and• Advising on the likely success of development proposals on client sites.
