As a volunteer EMT, I screen underinsured patients at a local community clinic by taking their vital signs, performing basic diagnostic tests, assessing chief complaint and symptoms, and facilitating access to other facilities that can provide more advanced care if need be.

As a bioinformatician at the the UCSF Department of Neurology, I am working on expanding a predictive medical knowledge network called SPOKE (Scalable, Precision Medicine Open Knowledge Engine). This is an open source network created from publicly available databases, and serves to assist clinical researchers and clinicians with predicting therapeutics for treating certain diseases by utilizing proteomic, genomic and biological pathway data. Through utilizing coding languages such as Python and Java along with database languages including Cypher, MySQL and PostgreSQL, I am involved in developing and maintaining the SPOKE network. I am also using machine learning approaches to identify potential treatments for Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological disorders by running algorithms through SPOKE.

As a volunteer of the Let's Talk Program, I helped organize meetings and social activities every other weekend for early onset Alzheimer's patients. Along with these patients, we would make outreach phone calls to Alzheimer's patients in the Missouri area to ensure they are receiving an appropriate amount of care. This enabled the early-onset group to connect with other Alzheimer's patients and offer social support. This experience allowed me to engage with patients on a personal level and gain a better understanding of the nature of this condition.

As an undergraduate researcher at the Pappu Lab, I was involved in conducting computational biology and biochemical research. I examined protein sequences found in Intrinsically Disordered Proteins (IDP) implicated in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Huntington’s disease. Using computer languages such as Python, I used molecular simulations to perform advanced modeling of protein interaction phenomena.

As an MCAT tutor, I taught science and verbal concepts to pre-medical students on the Washington University campus who are studying for the exam. I would also guide them through sample practice questions that could appear on the exam. As a person with prior experience with the exam, I suggested test-taking strategies including time management, pre-test lifestyle advice, and information about the test's format.

As a volunteer at the oncology ward of St. Mary's Hospital, I assisted nurses with administrative tasks such as delivering food to patients, restocking medical supplies and cleaning patient rooms. I carefully assisted disabled patients with their movement within the hospital, and visited patient rooms to tend to the patients' needs.
