Web technologiesArchitecture team always has a stiff challenge in the form of “organization’s culture”. To challenge developers and to enable them think out of the box, it is imperative for an organization to introduce subtle noticeable changes. One such change was the choice of technology for web development. In the past people unequivocally picked ASP.NET for all web development. I encouraged teams to invest on technologies like Angular, React and Vue.js. In the last 12 months we have now witnessed more than 3 projects that rolled out on Angular 4 & 5. People no longer pick ASP.NET by default. We deliberate our choice as a group and proceed. Going forward, I see we’ll have more projects execute on React too. A choice is made not for the sake of technology, but more from the need to be lighter, scalable and faster development, not to forget availability of skilled resources.Mobile SolutionsMobile is such a ubiquitous technology today. We have an app for everything. In the past, Grange has deliberated a lot to build a mobile application for it’s associates. The challenge though was the technology behind the scenes. A mid-sized company cannot afford luxury of seperate Android & iOS team. Mobile app remained as a far fetched dream. I built a React-Native app with a web view to expose Grange’s internal web application. This release sparked more interest and very soon there were a lot of requirement to build more sophistication into the app. Now we have a very well built app that has a lot to offer. Voice Assistants2017 has been a year for voice channel to remember. From the time of iPhone release mobile channel has dominated the news for a decade. But 2017 saw the emergence of new channel in the form of Alexa and Google Home. Grange was not left behind. I worked with our business team to come up with both Alexa and Google Home app. With Microservice’s architecture on AWS, most common services in Grange public domain was built and released on both Alexa store and Google cloud store.Technology - ECMAScript 6, NodeJS 6.x,Cloud (Alexa) - AWS Lambda services and API GatewayCloud (Google Home) - DialogFlow/API.AI, GCP, AWS Lambda services and API GatewayMicroservicesPredominant choice of technology at Grange has been .NET. I came into question the status quo and introduced more open source technologies. Key for developers to support multiple channels are - speed of development and choice of architecture & technology. Building for multiple channels seemed to be a perfect case for Microservices based architecture. Emphasis was to build smaller, lean, testable, scalable and more important of all containarizable services. On top of it, have API gateways for integration with various channel’s. To facilitate all of this I introduced better processes through Jenkins for CI/CD. Moved repositories from Team foundation services to GIT.
