  • Solace Power Inc.
Founder, Founding Chief Executive Officer (Ceo) - Patented Wireless Power Disruptive Technology Bus.
Solace Power Inc. Apr 2007 - Dec 2017
Mount Pearl, Newfoundland And Labrador, Ca
I founded Solace Power as a passion project in 2007 - I was fascinated by wireless power technology and wanted to build a business around it; I wanted to be the first to successfully commercialize it. I lost track of how many investor rejections I faced before securing the first $50k, which I leveraged into $400k through government subsidy programs. This investment allowed me to hire the first engineers at Solace - all of whom have since moved on to successful careers at companies including Google and Intel. That team developed what became the foundation for follow-on technologies developed and patented. During that time, Solace was housed in a small business incubator, the Genesis Centre, graduating from that program in 2013 upon securing the third round of seed/angel investment. Owing to the generally new nature of the technology, research and development continued through two additional angel investment rounds of investment, followed by Series A investment in 2017. As a whole, 2017 was a pinnacle, record year for the company - record high revenue (4X prior year), Series A investment at record high valuation (3X prior year), multiple patents granted, first licensing customers signed, industry recognition for innovation and rapid growth, and a growing energetic team infused with the vast experience of new hires. While I have decided to take time to spend with my growing, young family, I will forever be the founder of Solace.

    • Built & managed all product & technology roadmaps, including 8 product platforms launched on time & budget• Gathered market needs and technical requirements, used them to determine the 8 releases developed and launched• Leveraging prior experience, I designed the business to build two streams of products: a set of licensable reference designs to be licensed; and, tangible highly-customized implementations to meet very particular needs of customers• Specific hardware products (incl. embedded software) negotiated, planned & delivered to customers included wireless power versions of: unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, or drones), helicopter rotor-mounted sensors, modular office tables, high-end motorized office chairs, automobile seats, automobile doors, soldier-worn batteries, soldier helmets• Implemented Product Requirements Documents (PRDs) in concert with customers and team engineers to confirm customer needs upfront and directly, and to ensure engineering understanding and appreciation of both technical requirements and intended product uses• Licensable reference designs included a series of eight (8) product platforms, all based upon a core platform, of varying power levels for customer implementation and/or integration, launched on schedule & within budget. First licensee negotiated & signed in 2017• Reference designs, as with the technology in general, were built & protected with extensive intellectual property (IP) measures, i.e. patents & trade secrets. Patents were filed and granted in several countries• Briefly experimented with a 3rd product stream – Technology Evaluation Kits (TEKs) for customers to have a low-cost evaluation of product capabilities• Elements of Agile development processes (incl. Scrum & Kanban) were adapted & implemented for hardware development for managing the development process• Targets/Goals were set and met at the engineering team level, sub-team level, & individual engineer level, sometimes executed as 6 or 8 week Sprints

    • While serving as CEO, with obvious overall P&L responsibility, I maintained a hands-on approach to managing the planning and development of engineering efforts.• Tracked all engineering efforts for team, down to the individual engineer and assigned tasks using Gantt charts (in Microsoft Project) to manage schedules, roadmaps, HR and general business planning. • Engineering team grew to 23 people, falling into two categories – (i) customer deliverables, and (ii) research. • Managed entire overall cross-functional team of 36 people, including 23 engineers. • Vialink Technologies Inc.
Co-Founder | Co-Ceo | Director | Board Member - Disruptive Iot Rfid Hardware And Software Business
Vialink Technologies Inc. May 2010 - Jan 2013
St. John'S, Newfoundland And Labrador, Ca
Co-founded ViaLink Technologies to deliver vehicle safety products through implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, specifically Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags and readers (both passive and active tags). Served as Co-CEO (Chief Executive Officer). The company initially focused on deployment of RFID for the purpose of managing general road safety, as a technology leap forward from standard traffic camera technology. Rather than rely on a visual technology that still requires a human to inspect photos, the process could be fully automated with technology, without any of the privacy concerns typically associated with camera technology. There was, and continues to be, demand for such a solution today, but implementation is hindered by legislative limitations in most jurisdictions. As a startup with limited resources, it was an uphill battle we couldn't win - much larger international organizations with deeper pockets are far better equipped to tackle the issues in the long-term commercialization of this type of solution. Before deciding to end our effort to build this business, we did pivot to focus on work site vehicle safety and found significant interest in such products; however, the long-cycle nature of testing and integrating new technologies into construction and other work sites was similarly prohibitive for such an early stage startup. Overall, this startup attempt was a fun learning experience.
  • Ican (International Communications And Navigation)
Technical Product Manager - Several Software Products For Marine Navigation And Communications
Ican (International Communications And Navigation) Nov 2006 - Feb 2009
    • Manage planning and implementation of product updates that were needed.• Responded to several international RFPs for multi-year contracts worldwide.• Acquired by a Swedish hardware partner company, CNS AB.• Developed PRDs and MRDs for legacy and new products. ICAN was a marine communications and navigation software startup that was nearly 10 years old when I joined, and it was ultimately acquired by a hardware partner around the time that I chose to leave for launching my own startup. ICAN produced various software products for use by Coast Guards and Navies worldwide, on ships and in ports, for tracking locations and vessel details, such as size and speed. The products were developed based on industry standards such as AIS (Automatic Identification System) and ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System). The company also developed a 'blue force' product for authorities to use for enhanced security. Given the nature of its customers, most new business was acquired through Request for Proposal (RFP) submissions, often jointly with strategic partners such as Northrop Grumman, with biggest wins being the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards. In my role with ICAN, I was a Product Manager defining requirements (with use of Product and Market Requirements Documents, PRDs & MRDs) for new development and updating legacy products, and completion of submissions for RFPs.
  • Consilient Technologies
    Business Development
    Consilient Technologies May 2001 - Oct 2006
Consilient Technologies was a B2B and B2C mobile software development startup that existed from 2000 through 2008. Unfortunately, the business didn't survive the 2008 financial crisis; however, it brought together a fantastic team of people who enjoyed the experience. I was the 7th employee and helped grow the business to approx. 100 people. It was initially a reseller of mobile data network airtime packages, when mobile data was still a relatively new thing, but quickly pivoted to a software business after a market gap was identified in delivering email to mobile device users. At the time, email was not accessible on mobile devices - they were only used for calls, texts and very horrible web browsing experiences. Research in Motion, now known as BlackBerry, launched a series of pagers and eventually mobile/smart phones, but they left several gaps in the market which I helped to fill through my work with Consilient. Below is a summary of my own evolution and growth through my experience working with this company, starting as a recent graduate with a brand new Computer Science degree, ultimately leaving the company an experienced product manager with the skills and knowledge to launch my own business. The items below are not entirely chronological - there was much overlap between the three roles/categories during my tenure with the company. Business Development & Technical Sales:• Worked with sales team to establish relations and become official partners with larger companies, some being Fortune 100 (at the time), such as Oracle, Sun Microsystems (later acquired by Oracle), BlackBerry, SingTel, and Novell.• Served as the technical sales person to explain product benefits to IT administrators and other technical persons involved in closing new sales.• Participated in successful responses to Requests for Proposals (RFPs).• Established new company office in Walnut Creek, California.• Participated in Venture Capital fundraising efforts, including on Sand Hill Road

J2EE)• Hired and managed other developers• As the first and only programmer in the company, designed and built the company flagship product using open standards and a combination of C, C++, Java (incl. J2EE). Product was conceived through an exercise of listening to prospective customers and determining what was needed to properly address their needs. • Built back-end server architecture and mobile device apps for several mobile devices, incl. BlackBerry and Nokia• Server product initially built as a stand-alone Windows-based product, but was quickly re-architected to a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) product hosted by Consilient and/or hosted internally by privacy-sensitive clients• Hired and managed a team of developers to grow the product• Served as the 'go-to' person for visiting customer sites, sometimes for extended visits to deploy and/or troubleshoot deployment challenges.
