About Kris Stewart

29 years at SDSU and Kris Stewart retired after Spring 2013 semester, but she's never leaving Encinitas along with surfer husband Glen & Swamis Surfing Association. She remains Professor Emerita in Computer Science at San Diego State U. , SDSU, & volunteer at Encinitas Senior Center Computer Lab.Building on a research background in numerical analysis, it was natural for me to work with the San Diego Supercomputer Center, SDSC, starting 1986 on mathematical software and curriculum development for high performance computing when I was hired at San Diego State University in 1984. These interests transitioned to teaching 3d game programming, with a focus on research projects that provide CS students with an opportunity for "in service learning" through design, study and implementation of simulations from other disciplines within a 3d Game Engine to benefit the curricula of that "other discipline".Once a professor, I served in the University Senate, chairing the IIT (Information and Instructional Technology) committee. SDSU joined with other campuses of the California State University, CSU, system in their bid for Internet2 access July 1997. Having seen the power that "fast" Internet brings during summers at SDSC, I felt our campus needed this resource, along with the responsibilities for secure network use that came along with this resource. Background, I built my own Imsai 8080 computer kit, adding Z80 floating point chip, in 1977 while pursuing Masters degree in Computer Science at SDSU. Implemented numerical analysis library on this 8-bit computer in BASIC, only language available then, and studied performance possible in the early days of personal computing. This led to my job offer at the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab, JPL, in Pasadena. Two years in a great job during Voyager encounters with Jupiter's Red Spot for me, and Glen discovered Greene & Greene architecture which became the basis of his career in fine carpentry. Glen felt air not fit for breathing and headed back to San Diego area to work and surf. I headed to Albuquerque NM to pursue PhD at UNM, eventually leading to faculty position at SDSU.Specialties: Numerical analysis, especially solution of stiff ODEs, ordinary differential equations.3d game programming initally with the Torque Game Engine, and later with Microsoft XNA Game Studio.
