Switching techniques included pulse-width modulation (PWM), rectification, regulation, push-pull, half-bridge, flyback, or buck-boost techniques. Power supply designs included the construction of transformers, inductors, snubber circuitry, and pulse-forming networks. Power MOSFETs, IGBTs, thyristors (SCRs), and optoisolators were utilized in most designs. • Contributed to the initial design specifications for Odyssey's "Around the World in the Stratosphere" balloon. Deliverables included layout of control panels, onboard data retrieval and communication instrumentation, cabin lighting, life-support controllers, and photovoltaic power inversion, distribution, storage, and safeguards. • Implemented a ship-mounted water quality monitoring system including the installation of underwater sensors, differentially corrected global positioning satellite (DGPS) receivers and rack-mounted control system. The control system utilized an onboard computer, YSI probe, sub-bottom profiler, transducer, depth sounder, magnetometer, and audio/video equipment for data acquisition, storage, and retrieval. Power distribution, conversion, rectification, and isolation specifications were identified and achieved. • Fabricated and installed an on-board ship system to detect shipwrecks and underwater artifacts for the Submerged Cultural Resource Unit Division of the National Park Service. • Team member for transformer design, prototype construction, and testing procedures for a magnetically coupled communication data line connection between a submarine and a torpedo. • Contributed to the design and testing of a through-the-earth communication system where encoded, low-frequency signals are transferred through the earth via magnetic dipoles and decoded on the receiving end with specifically designed computer software.
