When I was a kid, my sister and I went across the street to play with our neighbors. I wanted to play one game, but everyone else wanted to play another. As a compromise, they told me that if I played their game, when we finished, they would play mine. I’m sure you can believe my surprise when, at the end of the game, they all told me they weren’t going to play my game! In a huff, I marched back home to complain to my mother that they weren’t being fair. My mother, in her infinite wisdom, simply told me, “Life’s not fair.” It’s no wonder then that I became a lawyer. Imagine my chagrin when I discovered that the law, too, is unfair. Now, I do my best daily to work within a system wrought with inequity to drive change.Passionate about civil rights and criminal legal system reform, I'm a Senior Supervising Attorney at SPLC working toward reform in the Deep South.
