Performed neonatal and adult electroencephalogram (EEG) studies throughout the hospital: epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU), intensive care units, emergency room, neonatal ICU, outpatient clinic, and inpatient rooms. EMU patients included Phase I (scalp electrode) and Phase II (intracranial electrode) hookups as well as Wada and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) testing. Performed transcranial doppler (TCD) studies on patients with suspected vasospasm in the ICU. Reviewed and pruned Phase I EMU studies and ambulatory EEG studies for the reading physicians.

Performed tasks on various research studies as required by the epileptologists in the department of neurology on an as-needed basis. This included performing EEGs according to study protocol, uploading deidentified data, maintenance and pruning of EEG studies, database creation and management, and chart review.

Developed content for and ensured quality of competency exam for EEG technologists in hospital systems across the country. Researched professional literature to ensure alignment with current best practices, requirements, and regulations.

Assisted with planning and development of the epilepsy monitoring unit at St Joseph Hospital. Served as main point of contact for all things related to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and EEG department (inpatient, outpatient, neonatal, ambulatory). Ordered equipment, assisted with hiring decisions, and developed protocols for seizure patients with the assistance of our board-certified epileptologist. Scheduled patients for their admission to the unit; wrote and mailed out informational packets; performed EEG hookups using collodion; monitored patients for seizure activity; and disconnected patients upon discharge. Developed protocols for various neurodiagnostic procedures (Phase I EMU, Phase II EMU, Wada, bedside cortical mapping, ictal SPECT, PET with EEG). Clipped EEG data files and archived studies. Maintained Natus database. Developed and maintained spreadsheets of EEG and EMU department volumes, surgical patients and workups, and performed other data analysis as requested by department manager. Programmed Vagus Nerve Stimulators (VNS) as required – turning device off and on for MRI studies, adjusting device during monitoring unit stay. Educated patients on how to upload Responsive Neurostimulator (RNS) data. Taught monthly classes with nursing preceptor to newly onboarded RNs about the EMU, seizure safety, and epilepsy. Trained all newly hired technologists and signed off on competency evaluation forms. Developed agendas and case presentations for monthly Epilepsy Patient Care Conferences with epileptologists, neurosurgeons, radiologists, neuropsychologists, and other care team members.

Wrote a 35-question EEG Technologist Competency Exam to be used as a HealthStream module at various hospital systems.

Performed neonatal, pediatric, and adult electroencephalogram (EEG) studies, awake and sleep, in the lab and at the bedside of critically ill patients in the intensive care unit and emergency room. Explained procedure to patients, answered questions, and documented comprehensive patient history, including neurological symptomatology and medications. Applied electrodes according to the International 10-20 standard of electrode placement. Performed evoked potential testing and several types of sleep studies (PSG, MSLT).

Parkinson’s Disease Research, Education, and Clinical Center (PADRECC).Served as a research assistant and coordinator for multiple studies involving Parkinson’s disease. Prepared and submitted IRB documents to both the PVAMC and OHSU. Scheduled research participants for study procedures. Performed study measures with participants, which included balance, strength, gait, and neuropsychological testing.

Endocrinology, Bone & Mineral Department. Performed administrative duties for a multi-site longitudinal study about osteoporosis in men. The study spans 10 years and has enrolled over 6000 participants. Scanned and archived old IRB paperwork and study files, assisted other study staff with electronic IRB submissions, and learned about the grant-writing process.

Responsible for the coordination of document flow from initial input into the electronic Institutional Review Board system (eIRB) to the IRB staff, board members, and chairs. Prepared packets of study documents for IRB meetings. Reviewed and processed documents for research studies, including protocols, consent forms, HIPAA research authorizations, lay language protocol summaries, advertisements and waivers of authorization. Provided technical support for the eIRB and Conflict of Interest (CoIR) Management System. Supported system for facilitating inter-institutional agreement for multi-site research. Served as a resource for research staff regarding federal, state, and institutional regulations and policies regarding human subjects research.

Conducted clinical neuropsychological evaluations to assess cognitive functioning in patients with a wide variety of medical, neurological, and psychiatric illnesses. Duties included administration and scoring of an extensive battery of neuropsychological tests, recording behavioral observations, communication with patients and referring physicians, and training and supervision of more junior neuropsychology technicians. Collaborated with epileptologists at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center; performed pre- and post-surgical cognitive assessments for patients with epilepsy, assisted with several Wada procedures, and attended patient care conferences where patient EEG and MRI results were discussed.
