Writer/PhotographerFreelance (Self Employed) 2000 - PresentAs a freelance conservation photographer and writer I work to create awareness and understanding around ecological, human health and environmental justice issues. For more than a decade I have documented the US-Mexico borderlands and the impact of border walls and militarization on human communities, habitats and processes of migration. I also have worked for nearly a decade documenting the Anacostia River watershed in Washington DC. Most recently I spent 3 years on a sailboat, traveling through the Greater and Lesser Antilles and along the island chains on the northern coast of Venezuela. My work has been honored by the National Outdoor Book Award (2013 and 2019), Ansel Adams Award from the Sierra Club, and Vision Award from the North American Nature Photographers Association. I work with numerous conservation and news organizations including The Nature Conservancy, Western Rivers Conservancy, American Forest Foundation, National Geographic Society, Defenders of Wildlife, National Wildlife, BBC Wildlife and many others. In 2018, I released my first feature documentary, Ay Mariposa, a story about three characters living in the path of the US-Mexico border wall.See more of my work at http://kristaschlyer.com. -
